I just bought a Nikon D7200 (whoopie!) and I'd like to tell you why I bought Nikon rather than Canon or a different brand.

When I was young, my father bought me a Taron 35, a Japanese (back when Japanese meant "cheap") 35 mm camera with only manual controls. I used a separate light meter to determine exposure settings. I fondly remember the years that camera took me on photographic adventures. Sigh.

Eventually I learned about SLRs and of course I wanted one.
Now, in those ancient days THE rangefinder camera was the Leica (still is?) and THE SLR was the very expensive Nikon. I looked at pictures, catalogs, and salivated. So began my desire to have a Nikon SLR some day.

Now I have retired and it was time to by a DSLR. OF COURSE it was a Nikon. NOT for any technical reason. NOT because of any reviews. NOT for any issues relating to quality. I know that Nikon and Canon both produce marvelous cameras as do many other companies. They are all good today. (We are very spoiled!) My reason was purely emotional and irrational. So there!!!

Works for me

The reason I stayed with Nikon is that is what I have shot with since the 70's and they feel good in my hands.

I bought my Nikon camera's also because of emotion. Simon and Garfunkel sang of having a Nikon camera. Don't take their Kodachrome away. Beautiful film. Beautiful camera's

I bought mine because of the song (Kodachrome - Paul Simon).

When I shot film I used a number of Minolta cameras. I went digital about 10 years ago and went to Hunts here in the Boston area. When I asked what dslr he'd recommend he put a Cannon and a Nikon on the counter and said pick one. Always wanted a Nikon and the old Simon and Garfunckel lyrics "I've got a Nikon camera" popped into my head......that's why I now shoot Nikon!

You may have touched on something that is familiar to us old folks. A lot of us were in the military and those who served in the Far East were always trying to get our hands on a Nikon but they were never available in the PX. So in my case I wound up with a Minolta SRT 101 which I grew to love. When that went goodbye I bought a Minolta XG7. But when I was making good money in 1995 I did it! I went to B&H and traded in my stuff for a Nikon FM2n. I always wanted a Nikon and by this time I knew what I was getting. My problem was I didn't have the knack of holding still enough to shoot with an SLR so I got a Contax G2 and that improved the technical aspects of my photography to the point that I was no longer interested in an SLR at all. When digital became imperative for me I had already broken the Nikon craving and, to tell the truth, Nikon didn't help much with the styling of their new cameras. I know that isn't a factor in picture quality but we all like to feel we look like we are serious! I have adopted 4/3 and then m4/3 based on what others say but also because I don't feel like a geek carrying one in public. As I walk around NYC I see many people with serious enough cameras. By and large they are Nikons and seem to be the overwhelming choice of young women tourists. I suspect this may have a lot to do with Paul Simon, or maybe because their fathers always wanted a Nikon so they grew up with that feeling. My feeling is we are in the last days of the Nikon cult built on the FTN and the Nikkormat.

Having a reason for a particular system can be sound. I too started with the Minolta SRT-101. Ending the Minolta line with the 9Xi. A friend gave me a Contax 159mm as time went on, it was the Zeiss optics I fell in love with. Seem to be a class of its own. The reason for moving up to Contax RTS III even tho not having auto-focus capabilities it didn't matter. Even so; there are times auto-focus can play a role, (let say action), that manual can miss; so went on to Nikon. Why Nikon? With the use of the "F" mount, one can use any Nikkor lens dating back to and including 1959. This give the user the most selection of optics of all systems, even today. Manual or auto-focus. Film or digital. Therefore a sound reason for Nikon. Why Canon? Remember my love for Zeiss optics? With the proper adapter, I can once again use those c/y mount optics with the Canon FE mount. For me ....... Sound reasons. See pics

My first SLR, a Russian Zenit was actually my girl friends... but I used it
more than she did. So when it came time for me to buy my own, as good as the body and particularly the lens was of the Zenit, I bought a Nikon FM... because in an Australian film of the time one of the characters, played by the hilarious comedian Graham Kennedy, explains how, with a Nikon FM, he photographed his wife being unfaithful. The "character" was so pleased with the results of the camera
I decided to buy one. It couldn't have been better "product placement" if Nikon had of paid for it. Completely irrational reason for the purchase decision, but the unit turned out to be as reliable as a hammer and sensational to use. It served me well for decades.

My First camera was the Minolta 201 black body and I love it.
i have a 50mm and a zoom 70 105mm with macro.
i bought a canon adapter but have mastered manual yet. lt has an off on bottom you push and turn and the button collapsed and you can't you turn if off and on. I shot football and had my pictures posted every day.
i would roll up and shoot 100 to 150 photos and had usually had to pick two to five photos to publish. it was fun and I loved it but their police no photographer and had to shoot a few and told them NOT to send me one of a multiple homicide on himself aging from two month old to his wife and I turned in my badge and press pass and never of a family and then turned the gun on himself. I turned in my badge and press pas and moved on. the camera needs to be cleaned and serviced and I can't afford it. I will always keep it for memories. One maybe. I also think Pentax is great. I have borrowed one for a month and it was fun and gave me some great memories and bought My Canon T5i am glad I did. As I said before I would love to have a nice Nikon to compare and learn to shoot both. I am a gluten for punishment but love to learn. as I said all of you dire hard Nikon fan that have ten or so give me one and I would forever be in your debt. Refurbished of used would be fine. I would take good care of it and try to make you proud. I now that it will never happen but i4's nice to dream. You never Know there are still good people rare but out there and this is home to The Great House of Hogs any I love my second family. You guy are cool and you care Thanks for all of help, picture and answers to some questionable questions you all know what your talking about or you dig till you find someone or research. Again Thanks Hoggs you (we) rule.
