are there any great photographers out there that can capture a quality image with a lens at that price. I was told its not the equipment its the photographer.

I understand the Edward Weston made some of his most famous photos using a lens he bought for $5 US. Even allowing for inflation since the mid 1920s that would still be a cheap lens.

What off brand lenses are you talking about. Some consider Sigma or Tamron as off brand. Both make some top quality lenses

I think that's the idea - lenses made by a company other than the camera company. Not the same brand as the camera.

Each lens from each manufacturer needs to be evaluated on its own, but some general statements can be made as starting points for the evaluation. If you're getting a Canon L-series lens, for example, you can be fairly confident it will be excellent. Same for a Nikon pro-level lens (fast prime or zoom). A number of the Sigma EX and Tokina AT-X lenses are very good or better. Tamron has a few winners. The last thing I would use to decide which lens to get is where it was made.

It is the photographer, camera, lens, subject, and light. A great photographer will do much better with excellent equipment rather than mediocre stuff. Since the two analogies tend to be golfing and auto racing, Tiger Wood will never win the Masters with cheap clubs, and Dale Earnhardt Jr will never win the Daytona 500 in a Yugo.

I know it's blasphemy, but I disagree with this quote. Or rather, I think it needs a major qualifier: making "some" is useless, I want many, and a variety.
