Sigma is the only lens manufacturer still making it's lenses in Japan...

That's just because they can't afford to build a plant in China or Thailand. :D

I know it's blasphemy, but I disagree with this quote. Or rather, I think it needs a major qualifier: making "some" is useless, I want many, and a variety.

Substitute "interesting" for "beautiful."

As has been said, they are made in other countries, including China, for the cheap labour, not poor quality...

It depends on what you mean.

Many major companies have their equipment manufactured in China to save costs - these include Nikon and Canon and it is quite likely that the electronics are made in China also.

Tamron lens are available from China - these are identical to the ones supplied by Tamron dealers but are a couple of hundred pounds cheaper and do not have the 5 year guarantee.

Depends on the latitude you give the chef!

Of course there are. There are photographers shooting for National Geographic using only phone cameras. Look at the shots taken in the 30s and 40s by what now would be considered inferior glass!

are there any great photographers out there that can capture a quality image with a lens at that price. I was told its not the equipment its the photographer.

I'm not referring to products manufactured by well established companies in their own factories when I say it's a gamble and I won't try to claim that Chinese companies on their own turn out only inferior products. Sorting out the good from the bad when dealing with Chinese companies is much more of a gamble then with the multi-national companies that have products made in China. I've seen that both in my work and in my wife's work where she has had to deal with getting products manufactured in China.

I'm not referring to products manufactured by well... (show quote)

As someone pointed out, even name brand companies have had bad experiences with Chinese manufacturing - pet food, for example.

True, but we've had similar problems right here. There's a big beef recall going on at the moment. The difference seems to be the mentality of the communist system. Quality has never been a big concern for consumer products and based on my wife's experience the concept is still a bit of a novelty there. I won't say they aren't making gains, but they still have a ways to go. Of course, the same is true for a number of countries, and not just communist ones.

Right. There is great concern right now about China's plans to become a major airplane manufacturer. Commercial jets are quite a bit more complex than a camera lens. If something goes wrong at 40,000 feet - well, you know. The Chinese aren't known for their maintenance.

I hadn't heard about that. Actually, I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. Before any commercial aircraft can serve the US market it has to be certified by the FAA. Europe also has it's own certification process. In addition, a huge percentage of the components of any airliner, including Airbus, are made here in the US. Especially avionics, pumps, servos, actuaters, and engines. These are all industry standard and are demanded by the market, rather than something homebuilt by the Chinese. Even things like the windshields of the Airbus are made by PPG.
