Adobe believes they are the best and seem to have the demand for their software. Their attitude is they DO NOT have to deal and to an extent they are right. While the amateur photographer gets the boot the masses are still standing in line waiting to lay their money down for an Adobe product. Just the way things seem to work in any business. If you like their software you must play their game. Refusing to buy another Adobe product because you do not like their upgrade policy may give YOU a warm feeling of satisfaction but will do little to change anything. Sorry but that is reality. I do agree with you that while Adobe makes some top notch software their policies can be hard to swallow, especially this cloud BS! In the long run is is all about $$$ and how much they can extract from customers and yes even if they offend or lose a certain percentage of customers it is the name of the game.

I have been under the impression that a buyer of used software will have trouble registering it their name. Is this not the case with PSE?

http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/legal/licenses-terms/pdf/CC_EULA_Gen_WWCombined-MULTI-20121017_1230.pdf - starting on page 113.

Section 4.6.1, page 117 specifically states that you may not sell, rent, assign, etc. this product.
Having said that, Section 4.6.2, does allow you to sell IF you also include registration number, any ofther software or hardware that was bundled with the program, AND remove the program from your own computer.
And of course, the seller will have to deactive the registration number with Adobe so that the buyer can register the program.

Adobe has long had a policy of offering free or discounted upgrades to buyers who had purchased within 30 days of a new versions release, but NEVER over 30 days. And no other software provider offers free upgrades to new versions at all.
If a newer version offers significant improvements that you want, buy it. If it does not offer anything, don't buy it, you have a choice. Not sure what your issue is here. If you bought a Canon 60D just 3 months before they introduced the 70D would you be expecting them to replace your older model for free???? Obviously not.

i would disagree with that, Some software manufactures do offer upgrades as long as they are withing major releases.

You say that like profit is an unalienable right. It isn't. All companies presumably exist to make a profit, but not all of them succeed at that goal.

Adobe has and will continue to make choices in terms of market segmentation and customer service. If, in doing so, they alienate some existing customers, their business model will have changed. Their current model apparently is directed at serving professionals (meaning people who use their products to earn a living) rather than amateurs. It remains to be seen whether that is the right choice.

I really do not see how asking for $10/month is targeting professionals. Adobe has changed their business model to fit with current technology that provides better and faster service and greater security.

Adobe has upgraded Elements consistently in September or October for the last several years. This year's upgrade to 12 added very little in functionality and actually took away a few things. It did not upgrade to 64 bit use in Windows, but did for Apples.

The only reason to need an upgrade is if you need a new ACR level for a new camera model.

You can now and could in past versions download the latest ACR and cut and paste it in to update whatever version of Elements you are using. It is not automatic, but they supply concise instructions on the website.

There is no argument from me, and I have no insight into their marketing goals - only the marketing programs they announce to the public. Their CC plan is $50/month for the entire suite with a $10/month subset for photographers who are only interested in PS and LR.

Each potential customer will have to determine whether that sales model suits him or her. My perception is that a rental program will not appeal to many hobbyists because there is no residual value when the rental stops.

I just got a letter from Adobe in the mail in which they informed me that between Sept 11 and Sept 13, 2013 someone hacked them and accessed certain customer order information, including mine (probably).

They went on to say that names, payment card expiration dates, encrupted card numbers, and other information was stolen.

They offered a one year complimentary credit monitoring membership, and they recommended that I monitor my account for incidents of fraud and identitiy theft, etc.

Consider yourself lucky. I just received a notice from Adobe informing me that their computer system was hacked, and that I, along with many other Adobe customers, needed to check my bank account to make certain that I hadn't been compromised. As a result, I've had to get a new credit card from the bank.

I now have version 10. You comment enforces my thought NOT to upgrade to version 12. Thanks.

I have budgeted $9.99/mo for photography. Thank you, Adobe. I have everything including the latest upgrades to Lightroom, Photoshop and more. I have the best gear. Thank you, Nikon. I have my health. Thank you, parents.

Surely there must be something I can complain about. Please help me. Surely, someone can suggest something.
