someone here recommended this site. Hall Schmitt is an excellent instructor. The instruction is for lightroom 4 which is not the different from 5. Right now it's free. I brought the program and fell it's worth every cent.

Is this 17 hour lesson free? I hate it when they make the price hard to find. I clicked on "Buy," and this is what I got. It apparently sells for $0.00."

EDIT: I took a chance and went ahead with the payment info, and this is what it showed. So, does it mean I get it for free, or would I get a surprise charge to my PayPal account?

The site is somewhat confusing. Just scroll down and click on any one of the short lessons. They are, indeed, free. I'm assuming that at some point they charged for the 17 hour set, but no longer.

I would recommend Scott Kelby's book on LR or any of his books on Photoshop. Get the spiral bound versions.
This way it's always at hand. You do not have to bounce between web sites to check on something. To me it saves time.

I received lightroom 5 as a gift from my kids. I was using iPhoto but many people recommended that I move to lightroom. I have had to hire a Mac advisor to come and help me set up lightroom and fiqure out the best place to keep my photos and to backup my photos. Now that I have that somewhat squared away I need to learn to use lightroom. I have a book that I am working with and trying to find the best way to organize my photos so they can be easily found. This is taking me quite a bit of time and I wonder how much of an idiot I am because everyone who has lightroom tells me how simple it is. Am I just taking too much time reading and understanding or should I just jump right in, download and move pictures into lightroom and just get going?

Congratulations on receiving your gift :P . Lightroom is easy when compared to full-blown Photoshop, but there is still a lot to take in. Take your time to read and understand the book(s) you have on the subject, but by all means - Jump right in and get going!! The nice thing about Lightroom is it does not make direct changes to your pictures so if you make a mistake, no harm no foul. And it won't be fun if you try to make yourself read and understand the whole manual before you play. When you read something really neat in the book, load a picture and give it a try - you'll learn it quicker that way anyway. Ask plenty of questions here - there are several experienced Lightroom members here at UHH. You will probably want to subscribe to the Post Processing section here on the forum where your questions can be answered in great detail. Just remember to have fun - it will only be a chore if you make it so. :D

This is by far the best and most comprehensive (free) tutorial on LR that I've found. It's worth every minute spent with it. http://en.elephorm.com/tuto-lightroom-4-complete-training.html

I too am a huge fan of this tutorial. It brought a much deeper understanding to the use of LR. I do, however, like Kelby's Training and use his structure method of saving photos. It just makes more sense to me to locate older images with some words with dates in lieu of just number representation. That said, you will love the program.

I bought this book by Scott Kelby. Takes you step by step through the entire program. It is easy to understand and in a few days you will have a handle on it.

Recently I have been told if I have CS6, I don't need light room 5 because I have the same engine and basically everything else is the same except for the organization of pictures, not sure if all this is correct..

mini bridge and lightroom are similar, but lightroom is great for organizing your photos and finding them years later

The way they handle editing is completely different.
CS works on individual pixels. LR works on the image.
You CAN do the same edits in CS as LR, but you can't do that to a large number of images at the same time.

What they DO have in common is Adobe Camera RAW.
The 'engine' that resolves the RAW image file to something the software can handle.

I will have to look at Kelby. I do use dates in my organization.
