Check out Laura Shoe's comprehensive tutorial. It is well worth the cost. LR has many wonderful features, but one needs help in fully utilizing them. Go to laurashoe.com.

I received lightroom 5 as a gift from my kids. I was using iPhoto but many people recommended that I move to lightroom. I have had to hire a Mac advisor to come and help me set up lightroom and fiqure out the best place to keep my photos and to backup my photos. Now that I have that somewhat squared away I need to learn to use lightroom. I have a book that I am working with and trying to find the best way to organize my photos so they can be easily found. This is taking me quite a bit of time and I wonder how much of an idiot I am because everyone who has lightroom tells me how simple it is. Am I just taking too much time reading and understanding or should I just jump right in, download and move pictures into lightroom and just get going?

It is not you. It is a typical Adobe product. Everything in it is counter intuitive. It is a great program once you figure out the A-backwards way everything works. Just go slow and things will make sense eventually...except for their file management system, which really sucks. The rest of the program works well.

Recently I have been told if I have CS6, I don't need light room 5 because I have the same engine and basically everything else is the same except for the organization of pictures, not sure if all this is correct..

They are two products with two different primary functions, and a few overlapping functions.

PS is a graphic editor. LR is digital asset management software. LR's editor is powerful, however and is capable of 80-90% of the edits you'd want to do to a photo. Both employ Adobe Camera Raw.

Julianne Kost is fantastic. Adobetv tutorials (Julianne is a teacher there) are great if you are like me and prefer having someone show you how to do things. Another awesome lady is Erin Quigley at goaskerin.com. I am attending a workshop on LR5 with Erin on Little Cayman Island in March [have to go where the workshops are you know :-) , at least thats what I have to tell my wife] of course I am a Diver as well, so it will be an awesome trip. Little Cayman is where i met Erin the first time at a digital shoot out. Awesome place. Dive in the AM, workshop in the PM

I recently went from Aperture to LR5 and haven't looked back. I joined Lynda.com for one month and learned a lot from the tutorials they offer. It was worth the $25.

It does take some time but once you're comfortable with it you'll never look back. Not only will it recover the occasional "Oops" but it will transform your normal images.

There's a plethora of info on the net. Yo might also consider Kelby Training.com on the net; they specialize in Adobe training.
