The last time I went to the Cellphone Provider’s store they had displays for “Apple” and for “Samsung”. Punct. I have seen the same two-way choice on Cellphone-provider ads.

I doubt you not being aware...will change Sony's business plans...

It's a smart move...it will probably happen...which is great actually.

Apple and Samsung are the best selling ones I think. But there are many others like Google Pixel, Motorola (now owned by Lenovo). Nokia is another brand (sold to Microsoft but I don't know if Microsoft still own the Nokia cellphone business or not).

My point was I don’t see Sony’s having much market power in the cellphone area.

Well...they certainly do...but not with their own models...though not heavily marketed...does very well.

Sony is behind...almost every cellphone out there...in some way...they make coin either way.

But this is not about the phone per se...this is about integrating their phone with their cameras.

Something no other camera company can even attempt...not without a decade and tons of coin investment.

It's a serious edge....and I doubt Sony will miss that opportunity.

I can't wait...just going to make shooting images that much more enjoyable...and better.

What amazes me is the cat fight it started here! There are many good cameras available today. I own and use a couple types and brands that work for me. And what others use is up to them. I don’t think any less of someone because they use a different camera than me. Nor more of them if they use the same brand as me. In fact the only advantage having someone use the same brand is to help solve problems or issues, with settings, etc.

I really don’t understand the cat fight over brands here.

It isn't even so much intergrating the phone as it is the phone technology based on an android operating system. The operating system will then allow the cameras to work better/faster than they can today.

Interesting video.

I believe it's a no-brainer that tech companies hold back on technology so they can introduce an updated model later. I first became aware of this with Apple products. According to T&C, the head of Sony said that in an interview. They hold back and then leap ahead to surprise and mislead the competition. I like the idea of having the Android OS in a camera. More performance! As it is a now, it takes a huge amount of programming to a camera's software to add features. With Android, making changes would be much easier and faster.

I plan to spend the rest of my life in the future, and it's going to be great! 😲

I foresee Sony becoming the #1 camera company in terms of performance and features within a few years.

That's true. Sony tried several times. They never got a lot of market share of the cellphone business. But now putting Android in their cameras may even help selling their phones. So I don't say that Tony was wrong in this case. All I say that if it's true and they could beat Canon in the market with this I will never have GAS again. It would be for very boring camera to use.

I wonder if Sony is supplying technology for cell phones, the way they sell electronics to other camera companies.

Found this on Quora:

"Samsung being a manufacture make most of its parts but buys Chipsets for some of its phones from Qualcomm for phones sold in countries that use CDMA networks. They also use Sony camera parts in some of their phones. Samsung also assembles its phones in their own factories in South Korea, Vietnam and India."

Do we really WANT our cameras to behave like phones?
I have an iPhone 14 Pro max which I like very much. I like and use the camera often. I love having it in my pocket and having access to the instant sharing. I wouldn't want to be without it in my pocket.
When I'm using full frame cameras, I really don't want ANY of those conveniences. I am concentrating on capturing RAW files that I will post process and later print.
I see it as a different process.
I would also be the first to admit that camera operating systems could use improvements for ease and speed of use, but not to make them more like my phone.
Perhaps that is what Sony intends. If so thats good. It will put pressure on Canon & Nikon to also improve that area.
Click bait aside, it may be a good thing, but it is not the 'end of anything as we know it'

We sometimes lose sight of just how good ALL cameras have become. We should celebrate that.
New cameras have made it MUCH easier to make acceptable to good photographs. It has even made very good pictures more plentiful, and Thats Great. We are all enjoying that.
But the technology has not made it ANY easier to make truly great photographs, they are still rare as hen's teeth.

It is probably better to avoid the High School Partisanship, and use what we have to make the best pictures we can make.
The last thing we should want is for a major camera company to meet its end. Competition moves the tools forward.

I think the days of one company making all its parts are long gone. I remember seeing a listing of all the countries that supply parts to American cars. "Made in America" with a lot of foreign parts.

Boeing has had a problem with that since they started relying so much on foreign suppliers.

GM "Key Suppliers
General Motors has a number of joint ventures in emerging market nations, such as SAIC General Motors in Shanghai, China, Ghandhara Industries in Pakistan, and General Motors India."

Head of Nikon stated at one time that up to 70% of parts in their cameras were outsourced from all over the world. He emphasized that the glass was all Nikon.

I just watched the video and found it interesting enough to watch to the end. I always wondered how cell phones seemed to be capable of things that cameras can't do. The idea of using an existing operating system seems plausible and wanted a cell phone, without the phone.

I was sorry to see this turn into a "shiniest badge contest" because this is the part that interested me... integrating the best of the camera and cellphone into one package. Giving the cellphone a larger sensor and interchangeable lenses, then giving the camera an OS that moves data 100 to 1000 times faster can't help but be revolutionary and game-changing, especially if coupled with AI. I'm not very imaginative, but even I can come up with some ideas of what might be possible in that scenario.

I was a Canon snob for 40 years. When I wanted to make the switch to mirrorless, I did through hands on research of all major cameras in my price range. I went with a Fujifilm X-T3! This was a brand that I never would have considered as being a serious contender and only included it because I didn't want to exclude any common brand ftpm my research.
My last Canon was a 5Dmklll (Full frame) and the X-T3 is APS-C. The X-T3 performance meets or exceeds that of the Canon in all areas.
ALL current cameras are quite capable. Ergonomics, Menu layout and options along with the number of programmable buttons, all played an important role in my decision.

Early Google phones had a lens that protruded an inch or more from the back of the phone. I looked at it, but that lens created serious "carryability" problems for the phone. It would have been a headache forever, at least for me.

My current S21 can do a lot of things very well withoug all that baggage, if you learn how to make it work. Current culture wants all of the results without any of the effort. I'm just not very sympathetic to that approach. Nor are all of today's kids, fortunately. Take something on. Do the best you can. If you succeed, great. If not, at least you tried. Want to try again? Great. You are a lot smarter this time.
