Nikon D850 Question on burst mode

I just sold my 850 after 5 years (Z7II). Your experience is unusual. Check that long exposure noise reduction is off and your card is functioning properly. I never had a buffer problem and always shot RAW (lossless compressed).

Have you checked custom setting d2 which sets the max number of continuous shots in burst mode? It's on page 264 of the manual. If that doesn't resolve it I'd check the speed ratings of your media as others have pointed out, that's on pg. 360.

any varient of the EN-EL15 works fine. I had one out of an old D300 and another third party brand that I used.

The Nikon D850 was neither built nor intended for the burst speeds you would need in sports as its buffer is smaller. Read what TRIX said. NO new battery needed. Best of luck.

I agree that it is likely an internal processing issue, and perhaps a slow card issue. I would suggest doing a camera “reset,” and then I would view a D850 camera “unboxing,” and “set-up” video on “YouTube” to get a decent camera baseline set up. I think Jared Polen, Tony Northrop, and others have posted such videos within the past several years. You should be able to get quite a few shots at continuous high without the camera’s buffer slowing things down. I can’t recall ever bogging my camera to a complete stop, but I haven’t held down my shutter release forever, either! I do use an XQD cards, and I have had no issues on either of my two D850s. I suspect a reset, and use of fast cards will help out a lot.

That usually happens to me when the XQD card is full and it's writing to the SD card.

Glad to hear you resolved the problem. At first it sounded to me as if you had bracketing turned on but you said 3 or 4 shots before it paused so I figured it wasn't that. If it were bracketing it would always be the same number of shots before stopping.

I'll have to try out the clarity setting to see if it does it on other models (I don't have a 850). I don't usually use those settings because I shoot raw only and those settings are irrelevant as far as the raw data are concerned.

I see some saying that the XQD is faster than the CFExpress. I find that is just the opposite my CFExpress is much faster than my XQD. My CFExpress read is 1700 MB/s and write is 1200 MB/s. Where my XQD card is read 440 MB/s and write is 400 MB/s. Never had an issue with my D850’s buffer slowing it down using the CFExpress

With the grip and shooting largest image and highest resolution, I shoot at 9fps with no buffering issues. I use XQD in my D850 and CF in my D5 for12fps.

Check speed on memory cards and also noise reduction.

Just checked it. Have mine set for slot 1 raw, slot 2 jpg fine. Slot 1: Sony CFexpress B 128GB at write of 1480mb/s. Slot 2: Sony SD 64GB 299mb/sec. Batteries (body and grip) EN-EL15a (7.0V, 1900mAh, 14Wh). I get about 20 frames at 7fps before it slows. I tried a couple of variations, i.e., slot 2 as backup, shooting raw only and still get about 20 frames.

Your camera looks at the slowest of your two cards which is the SONY SD. Try shooting w/o the SONY card and see if the write speed improves.

My D850 easily burst at 9 fps but I have a grip and D5 battery in it. That camera should do 7fps without grip and knock out around 30 or more shots in buffer before sliwing down. Try a fast card and shoot to one card in jpeg to see if it improves. Mine will do it with xqd card raw and SD in jpeg

That's about all the D850 gets. You get a few less shots than that if you don't have the battery grip, but it's pretty close.
