Have a recently purchased Nikon D850...NL15 battery...CF 256GB card...fully charged battery...am only able to get 3-4 shots in continuous mode before the camera pauses to buffer for about 10 seconds...Is this normal? Should I change batteries? I know the grip accessories offers more images in continuous but this seems like something is not functioning properly...any ideas? Appreciate your advice and Merry Christmas

Don't know for sure but likely has to do with how fast your card can write/record the shots

Are you recording RAW or jpeg (requires processing)? Make sure you do not have noise reduction on. I did that once and had a similar buffer issue. Is it a CF card or an XQD (much faster)?

How fast is the write speed on your card, my SLOW one is 170MB/s, my fast one is 300 MB/s.
I used to get about 7 fps with my D850 on continuous shooting RAW.

Hi, Thanks for the quick response. Yes, I do have NR on...it is a CF card...should I ude XQD only in the 850? Appreciate your help...

Unless it's a typo, the battery is an EN-EL15C. The D850 produces a large image file. Thus, the transfer rate needs to be high. The read/write speed of the memory card comes into play at this point.

My battery is an EN-EL15 without the C suffix...is that a variant I need to buy? Thank you...

I see the 15c is a lithium-ion battery...I will switch...thanks again for the info...

This isn’t a battery issue, it’s a processing and buffer issue. First, if large bursts are a priority, turn off as much in-camera. processing as possible, including noise reduction and lens correction features. Secondly, How are you using the card slots? Are you shooting raw+JPEG, or raw (or jpeg) to both cards, or are you using the 2nd card for overflow? You want any raw writes to go to the fastest card. Your manual will tell you the max number of shots in a burst in the various configurations before the buffer fills. The fastest configuration is usually to write JPEGs to a single card. Finally (which I think you’ve addressed), you need a fast card in your primary slot.

A clear, concise and complete answer to the op's question, thank you!

Thanks very much for your response. I am shooting raw in the primary slot with the secondary for overflow. I understand I should turn off VR and and lens correction issues as well..will continue to experiment...do a lot of birds in flight with a Nikon D500 and want to be able to use the 850 to get larger files...Best and thanks again,

The variation in batteries doesnt affect speed, only overall length of capacity. Theyre all lith-ion batteries. I use a mix of oldies (no letter) plus both B and C batteries in the Z7 which writes huge files. The batteries have no effect on bursts but my card speed is 1700mbs, and thaz what keeps everything going.

I doubt VR matters, but lens correction cuts the burst speed of my camera in half (each image file has to be processed, then stored)

Just checked it. Have mine set for slot 1 raw, slot 2 jpg fine. Slot 1: Sony CFexpress B 128GB at write of 1480mb/s. Slot 2: Sony SD 64GB 299mb/sec. Batteries (body and grip) EN-EL15a (7.0V, 1900mAh, 14Wh). I get about 20 frames at 7fps before it slows. I tried a couple of variations, i.e., slot 2 as backup, shooting raw only and still get about 20 frames.
