Are you recording RAW or jpeg (requires processing)? Make sure you do not have noise reduction on. I did that once and had a similar buffer issue. Is it a CF card or an XQD (much faster)?

If it’s CF it’s CFExpress and faster than XQD.

Have a recently purchased Nikon D850...NL15 battery...CF 256GB card...fully charged battery...am only able to get 3-4 shots in continuous mode before the camera pauses to buffer for about 10 seconds...Is this normal? Should I change batteries? I know the grip accessories offers more images in continuous, but this seems like something is not functioning properly...any ideas? Appreciate your advice and Merry Christmas

You should get more than that. Check Nikon info & make sure it is the correct CF card type. Then look for speed & buffer reviews. I don't know about the D850 but my D810 has a setting in the menu's where you can set the buffer limit. I suspect the D850 has one to & you might want to check that setting.
The vertical grip only offers more frames per second (fps), not buffer.

The Nikon D850 does not use CF (Compact Flash) cards. Its second slot use either XQD or CFE Type B cards (the fastest). What card you buy matters. Check your speeds. The other slot uses a variety of slower cards. Best of luck.
