I was told that wearing a baseball hat backwards was made popular by Ken Griffey Jr. When he was a youngster hanging with his father who was a major league ball player, he wore his hat backwards so the bill wouldn’t fall down and block his vision.

For me, the fad of wearing your hat the wrong way is akin to the fad of B&W photography which is catching on with the same level of intellect on here.

Never say never.

There is a wrong way to wear a hat but it depends on circumstances, not style. If you're wearing a hat with a visor or brim, that element has a purpose: to shield your eyes against sun or rain. If you're wearing the hat in a manner that defeats that purpose, you're wearing it wrong. That purpose could be served if the brim or visor is on the back of your head or on one side or the other of your head. It is not necessary that the hat be worn with the visor centered on your face for every situation. On a very sunny day with the sun at your back there is a good reason to wear the visor pointing backwards. That is certainly not the case in photo #2, so that person is wearing it wrong. Not because the visor is pointing backwards, but because it is not serving its designed purpose.

And there are sometimes good reasons to use monochrome for a photo. I'm not a fan of monochrome photos (I took so many of them in the '40s and '50s) but with modern equipment, although digital cameras can handle high ISO well generally, there are overly high ISO settings in which the color shifts to unmanageable levels. In a case like that I have converted photos to monochrome to get an acceptable photo.

Thank you Jerry for starting this discussion. As a life long teacher, I see children wear their hats backwards, as a bit of a 'right of passage'. Then as they become teenagers, they learn that it's a child-like behavior, and a teenager is not a child any longer. So, when an adult wears his hat backwards, I question the maturity of that person.

There’s 3 pages of comments here but has anyone mentioned those people that wear their hats sideways. Logically, there could be reasons for wearing one backwards, but sideways is ridiculous. My 2¢.

The backwards cap was first worn on the baseball field by catchers, to keep the brim out of the way of their protective masks. But it caught on as a cultural phenomenon following Mr Sylvester Stallone's 1987 arm-wrestling movie "Over The Top," followed by high-profile baseball star Mr Ken Griffey Jr in the 1990s.

I understand why the first guy is wearing his hat backwards. He is doing a video and with the bill in front, his eyes would be in shadow. My issue is why he is wearing a hat indoors in the first place! If you are doing a video, it is most likely to promote something and a logo hat could do that for you, however with it turned backwards, even that effort is defeated! In other words, no excuse for the dum-dum in the first shot.

Absolutely right! I had enough of baseball style hats in the military to last me a lifetime, but since I have little hair left, I never go out without my Tilley. And Jerry, you are exactly correct - I have no interest in the information from anyone wearing a cap backwards (and indoors).
