I have a suggestion which is that the technical guy is balding and is self conscious of it, so that is why he wears a hat. But wearing it correctly does not work on camera since it will shadow his face.

Maybe, but more often it’s the teenager at the Best Buy Geek Squad. I’m an old bald techie, but I wear a Tilley hat religiously so I don’t need to worry which is the front (not that I could tell anyway)
