The pictures weren't any better with my new pro camera upgrade from my minolta maxxum.
Same film same lens. Money should have been saved for a better lens?

I was amazed. She won first prize Popular Photagraphy contest with her point n shoot film camera with drug store brand film. And through the upstairs village hotel window on a rainy morning. The rain just stopped, and she waited until there was a lonely man walking down the cobblestone street.

There wasn't any 400 page technology there. Only here billion page brain.

Jerry, I just searched for that title on youtube and couldn't find it. Could you post the link to the referenced article? I have my suspicions as to who posted it.

That was the title that caught my attention on YouTube. The guy showed us several awful pictures taken with his fairly new Canon DSLR. He admitted, though, that it was his fault, not the camera's.

The point of his video is that you can take good pictures with almost any camera. Sometimes, too much technology can be a hindrance. He recommends using whatever camera you want, but you must get to know it thoroughly. Fumbling with controls and menus messes up your flow and ruins the experience.

This is hardly a new idea on UHH, but it was nice seeing an "expert" say the same thing.
That was the title that caught my attention on You... (show quote)

May I respectfully ask what is the point of your thread. Your title says, Bad $1,200 Camera. But in your narrative you tell us the man you are talking about said it was not the camera's fault. So apparently the camera was not bad at all. He goes on to say it was his fault. You tell us none of this is new on UHH. That is all true.

What is the point of your thread?

The Better Half took a picture of me with my camera and it made me look old, bald, pot-bellied, whiskey, and unattractive.

I told her that I was getting rid of the camera for it made me look just like it does when I look in the mirror each morning. I need to get a more expensive camera..!

In a way photography is simpler but also much more complicated. Back in the day all one had to do was take a reading on one's Luna Pro, focus and it was done at least for the camera. Of course there was a matter of developing the film and printing but that sort of has its equivalent now in post development. I just ordered a Holga 120N Camera from Freestyle to sort of get back in the old order again. Of course it's not a Hasselblad but it should be fun.

First and foremost, selling new models after new models is for profit (the bottom line). Whether new technology will get you to improve your photography depends on a lot of things.

Because people buy it.

@John N, You raise a very valid point, and I assure you, you are not alone.
With digital sensors, cameras gained nearly limitless functions and features because it is all done in software.
Most camera designers/ engineers see adding new functions as a 'why not' decision, --maybe someone will use it.
So we get, as someone pointed out, 600 page manuals. There are indeed some folks who use each feature , we all choose some small subset of available features tailored to the way we work.
Leica took a different path, many of their digital cameras feel just like their film cameras. So what you wish for is possible. I'm not suggesting you buy a Leica (unless you want one) but most cameras now have the ability to call up global configuration presets --something like C1,2,3 on the PSAM dial. What I would suggest is that you think about how you want your camera to work, and then get some help from a friend, Camera store, or calling Canon to get your preferred configuration programmed into a preset. Then you can still experiment any way you wish , but always get back to a known interface by simply rotating the dial to C1
Good luck, Hope this helps a bit.

I'll never read or understand a 600 page manual...

If the manufacturer DID make a simple 5 page manual, many people still wouldn't read it. Some people are just that lazy. Then they will complain because customer service won't help them.

If the manufacturer DID NOT make a 600 page manual, some people would be upset because they wouldn't be able to learn something new and create beautiful images. They just bought a new, advanced camera and they want to be able to take advantage of the new technology.

Dealing with the public - you can't win.

Some people, like me, really struggle with the technology. Not so much with the technology itself but just remembering what it can and can't do. Even manual operation isn't really manual anymore. If I could have my old Fujica ST801 with a sensor I'd sell all my CANON stuff tomorrow.

It could be (quite likely) that my struggles with technology are attributable to a form of Dyslexia - and as this wasn't diagnosed until I was 58 I expect there's a few more people out there just like me.

HERE, HERE! I resemble that remark! hee hee

Bubbee, "UGG has made a profound difference in my life."

Not in mine! Oh, I suppose that I picked up a tip here and there but a "profound difference" - nope. I can think of two things that made "profound" diffs in my life: at age seven I became a really good reader who loved to read and at age 31, I graduated from Yale Law School, which totally changed the trajectory of my life. Well, maybe three: I served in combat in Korea for a year or so at the age of 22 which gave me a lot of self - confidence. Harry PS I bought a Canon 5Dc early on and it's still my main camera. 12 mp ain't a lot but it let's you print 8x10s. That became my preferred size in B/W when I was shooting dance and theatre with a 35mm all those years ago when I was in college. (I do have a nice [imho] 35mm color print of my significant other standing on a Pacific beach. The print is 12x18 or thereabouts. IIRC it was taken in 2001 with a Nikon.) I printed it myself on a Canon Pro 100, sprayed it and put it up in direct artificial light, indirect sunlight. To these old eyes, it hasn't faded a bit. Harry
