May I respectfully ask what is the point of your thread. Your title says, Bad $1,200 Camera. But in your narrative you tell us the man you are talking about said it was not the camera's fault. So apparently the camera was not bad at all. He goes on to say it was his fault. You tell us none of this is new on UHH. That is all true.

What is the point of your thread?

Dennis

I believe the point was if one is going to step up to the latest and presumably better technology, learn how to use that technology. Otherwise (my inference), don't step up.

Even though I have a dSLR, I still use some of my film cameras that are at least twenty years old. They all work.

Film isn’t dead. It just smells funny!

When I went digital in 2005 I didn’t even bother to have my last two used rolls of film developed. Never looked back.

'Cause everyone thinks they need the latest and greatest?

A new camera is just that. It’s new and nothing more. But the real talent of a photographer is their experience. If you keep buying the latest and greatest, then you are just starting all over again.

I retired from education years ago. Over the years, and this may also have occurred in other professions, an expert was considered any educator from more than 20 miles away. Given that, I find plenty of “expert” in UHH that I have learn a lot from since joining; from composition, to lighting, to DOF, to lens choice, and on and on, and I thank you all for your expertise.

To profit.

Ive said it before... but, a talented Photographer was invited to a dinner party.

When he arrived the hostess said; "Ive seen your photos, the're sensational,
you must have a great camera".

As the Photographer was leaving the party he said to the hostess, "The food was sensational,
you must have a great stove."

Eddie Steichen used a Kodak box camera, not a Canon with the newest technology LOL

A great chef can achieve wonders in the kitchen with only basic ingredients and the right attitude, the rest of us are always left wondering whether his camera has a mirror.

I can't speak for the "rest of us" (just as you can't)

You see, from your perception I am part of "the rest of us"... However I am not "left wondering whether"
my camera has a mirror.

You should let your photos do more of the talking, as the're not bad and worth viewing... most of the time. :-)

"Ex" as in "A has Been" and "Spurt" as in "A drip under pressure".

I was going through Jim McCurry's Z9 book and one of his statements clicked with me. Paraphrasing, newer cameras may be complicated, but they all come down to setting the ISO, shutter speed, f stop, and focus modes. The camera manufacturer's usually make these settings easy to find and adjust. Master these settings first and start taking pictures, then look at your camera's other functions and features.
