GIMP is powerful, but about two/three years behind PS. Like PS large learning curve. Not as user friendly as PS. If you need ease of use it is not for you.
I use GIMP only on certain photos that I want more out of, about once a month. Luminar is what I use for most of my editing because of ease of use. Note: I am an enthusiast, not professional.

I'm a "time is money" guy all the way, Brent. Your passion should be enhanced by your ability to get around in post, not constipated, and you already know PS! After all these years using the LR/PS combo I can't imagine trying to get as fluid using GIMP...or any other software for that matter. 10 bux is nothing compared to the aggravation and time lost cobbling together new software. Going from LR to PS and back, with all the different plug-ins available in both, is worth every penny and then some.

I have looked at GIMP but for a Photoshop user it was too much like starting over. Elements turned out to be a complete waste of money and I took it off my computer again and chalked it up to experience. Affinity hit all the right buttons; comparatively easy to transition to, capable and low priced.

At present the Mac developer for GIMP is no longer working on the updates to GIMP and they are looking for a programmer to support the Mac version. I have used GIMP with Darktable as the RAW processor and it works great together, however I prefer Photoshop CC at $120 a year. I keep GIMP on my Windows PC and Photoshop on my iMac and the advantage of GIMP is it can use PSD files when I need to make a change to an image on the Windows PC.

I use LR and a number of other programs including ON1 and ACDSee. I've been using GIMP for a many years, too. I've found that some are better for one purpose than the others and some are better for others. But, I do find myself using GIMP very often, maybe that and ACDSee the most. For more refined purposes I use ON1 and LR.

I was wondering why you cant run cs6 , was it deleted, is the new op system not running it?
I know in windows there is a part where I can run older software, I dont know if Apple has that.
If you paid for it, and lost the disk, but still have the pass word, you can still find cs6 on line.
many web sites have it, mostly for Win but im sure there are sites with apple ...

Brent:. There is a way you can revert back from Big Sur- Off hand I do not know how but have read there is a way- You might go to the Apple group area(forgot the name of the group). or try U tube. I know it can be done !! Might be your easiest answer...I did not upgrade as it does affect some of Adobe's programs and scanners - Another note for future use- I never upgrade for almost a year as there seems to be "THINGS" that don't show-up right away... If it works- Don't knock it!!

Gimp and Darktable are powerful tools. I use Linux as my primary OS so I decided to try them about 18 months ago. I found them to be somewhat difficult to use. My laptop has 64 gig of Ram so I built a Windows 10 virtual machine and allocated 32 gig. I haven't fully decided which software I want to use but the programs written for windows are much better. Since Gimp is a native Linux/Unix program it was optimized for those platforms. The ports are just that and not fully optimized. I found running Gimp on Windows much slower.

Glimpse is a separate branch from GIMP. Both development teams are reported to work with each other on new code, but at the end of the day, each team decides what they add to their own branch.

Brent, your "Surf Scenes" are terrific and you should not compromise on your quality photo's. If you are familiar with PS, then that's the way to go.

I also find Photoshop to be easier to use than Affinity. I tried the 90 day trial period to see if I could justify canceling my Adobe subscription. I'm still using Adobe and will continue to pay the cost as it seems better than the other choices.
