Recently I made a HUGE error: I got an email message to update my operating system on my Mac to Big Sur. I installed it. Little did I know that I was making my CS6 Photoshop program and others non-functioning. Adobe of course wants everyone to pay a monthly subscription fee to have Photoshop and I am now looking into other options. So far the one I am gravitating to is Gimp. It is similar to Photoshop but no fee. I'm wondering if any of you UHH members have switched over to Gimp and if you have, how do you like it? I've been using Photoshop my whole photographic time and didn't want to have to learn a whole new program. I have downloaded Affinity Photo for the free 90 day trial period but it's not really very user friendly. Thanks for your advice in advance.

I bought photoshop elements and it's a water down photoshop but so far does what I want. I had purchased an older photoshop that became worthless. Few hundred dollars wasted

Are you suggesting that Affinity Photo is less user friendly then PhotoShop? That's the first time I've heard that!

I can empathize with you. I succumbed to the messages to update to Big Sur. Halfway through the download my MAC froze up; ultimately I was able to recover a few non-essentials, but I lost everything else that wasn't backed up on a hard drive.

Now I'm a Dell user.

Affinity Photo is more user friendly than GIMP. Affinity Photo is priced right and has the tools you need to best replace PS. Why do you think it's named GIMP?

I used GIMP about a decade ago. I switched to Photoshop because it was more capable. There is a difference in the user interface that takes some time to get used to.

I was reluctant to go with the subscription model when Adobe started it but eventually realized that it was cheaper for me than paying for updates as I had been doing.

Any hobby incurs costs. Photography is no exception. $10/month is a low cost part of the hobby for me. Costs less than monthly impulse purchases and provides me with more lasting value than the impulse purchases.

GIMP is the Gnu Image Manipulation Program.

Two useless trash replies. So typical of UHH. Expect it to get even worse. I too am quite interested in hearing from at least a few actual Gimpsters :-(

Rotsa ruck to us both ...

Brent, as someone who has experience with Photoshop, I can't image you having serious issues adjusting to Affinity. I had very little post processing background when I started using Affinity. It was a little overwhelming at first but I caught on pretty quick. They have a lot of excellent tutorials.

Search YouTube for tutorials on all of them to help decide.

I'm not suggesting that. I have never used Affinity Photo so I would have to learn it. I have been using Photoshop for years and years and am familiar with it. I'm trying to get a photo editing program that is as close to Photoshop as possible.

LOL.......I didn't know it was named GIMP for that reason! I've been trying to use both programs and am really struggling with Affinity Photo but have been learning GIMP much faster.

GIMP stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program but I'm sticking with once you've used it, it really means gimp.

OK, so you've used PS for a long time. What about LR? Why try and stay with a program similar to PS? Is there a reason you were using a very old version of PS? What kind of files are you trying to edit?

More on GIMP: It comes off at first as full of features. But as you get to work they haul you up short. Can it create a layer mask like PS? Sure. Can it expand or contract that mask by X pixels once it's been created? No. Can it refine the edge of the mask in multiple ways like feather or radius or both? No. It can just blur the whole mask.

On and on as you use GIMP you encounter similar frustrations. Affinity on the other hand keeps up fairly well with PS.

DirtFarmer, thanks for bringing up the point of spending the money to use for your hobby. It's an option that makes sense. I am possibly thinking of just paying the money. It's up to $20 per month for me now.........not $10.
