Two useless trash replies. So typical of UHH. Expect it to get even worse. I too am quite interested in hearing from at least a few actual Gimpsters :-(

Rotsa ruck to us both ...

Yeah, me too! lol

DirtFarmer, thanks for bringing up the point of spending the money to use for your hobby. It's an option that makes sense. I am possibly thinking of just paying the money. It's up to $20 per month for me now.........not $10.

Why is it $20.00 per month for you? We all pay $10.00.

Brent, as someone who has experience with Photoshop, I can't image you having serious issues adjusting to Affinity. I had very little post processing background when I started using Affinity. It was a little overwhelming at first but I caught on pretty quick. They have a lot of excellent tutorials.

Carol, thanks for your input. I'm kind of a slow learner and get flustered easily! I want to instantly want to know how to use it.

GIMP stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program but I'm sticking with once you've used it, it really means gimp.

OK, so you've used PS for a long time. What about LR? Why try and stay with a program similar to PS? Is there a reason you were using a very old version of PS? What kind of files are you trying to edit?

More on GIMP: It comes off at first as full of features. But as you get to work they haul you up short. Can it create a layer mask like PS? Sure. Can it expand or contract that mask by X pixels once it's been created? No. Can it refine the edge of the mask in multiple ways like feather or radius or both? No. It can just blur the whole mask.

On and on as you use GIMP you encounter similar frustrations. Affinity on the other hand keeps up fairly well with PS.

Thanks for your input on Affinity Photo and GIMP. I didn't know all the negative things about GIMP. I'm really learning from all my UHH friends what's really to expect. Before I was using Bridge instead of LR. It's very similar to LR.

I'm not sure why it costs me $20.00. I'm not surprised though.......I expected a price increase before this. Adobe is out to make money and my professional photographer son really is annoyed with them. He went with Affinity Photo.

So then my question why do you need Photoshop -- just use LR?

It doesn't or shouldn't. It's $10.00 per month for the Photo Plan: https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/photography.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6oO-1JeJ8AIV3WxvBB3yNgwLEAAYASAAEgLV0PD_BwE&sdid=KKTGB&ttsrccat=sem-ww-di-ps-brand&mv=search&ef_id=EAIaIQobChMI6oO-1JeJ8AIV3WxvBB3yNgwLEAAYASAAEgLV0PD_BwE:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!3085!3!358183876522!e!!g!!adobe%20photography%20bundle

One of GIMP's strengths is its extreme flexibility with layout customization. You can even customize GIMP's layout such that it looks and acts much like Photoshop; instructions on how to do this can be easily found on the internet. Although I have not tried this specifically, I have tinkered with GIMP's default layout quite a bit to make it fit my workflow better.

Just a couple of years ago I bought a new computer. I couldn't install CS5.. I called Adobe and they got it installed and running for me ... no charge. Adobe is not the big greedy ogre some make them out to be. Give them a call. The worst that can happen is they can't help.

GIMP capabilities are probably good enough for about 90% of those of us here on this site. I would say there is a group here that understand the advanced features in a pixel editor, but since I'm not in the elite hierarchy, I haven't noticed those limitations. With all that, I rarely use it on photographs as darktable pretty much covers what I need for processing. In the end if it doesn't work for you, hopefully you find whatever you need in another program.

Davies Media on youtube has a large catalog of tutorials for GIMP that will help learn the interface (or change it) and some of the tools.

Thanks for the information. I'm digesting everyone's input and will come up with a solution soon! It will be good to have many people's thoughts on this.
