Recently I made a HUGE error: I got an email message to update my operating system on my Mac to Big Sur. I installed it. Little did I know that I was making my CS6 Photoshop program and others non-functioning. Adobe of course wants everyone to pay a monthly subscription fee to have Photoshop and I am now looking into other options. So far the one I am gravitating to is Gimp. It is similar to Photoshop but no fee. I'm wondering if any of you UHH members have switched over to Gimp and if you have, how do you like it? I've been using Photoshop my whole photographic time and didn't want to have to learn a whole new program. I have downloaded Affinity Photo for the free 90 day trial period but it's not really very user friendly. Thanks for your advice in advance.

Brent, I used to use gimp before Adobe. I haven't used it in several years. I went to Adobe because I wanted more.

Can't you go backwards and undo the upgrade?

DirtFarmer, thanks for bringing up the point of spending the money to use for your hobby. It's an option that makes sense. I am possibly thinking of just paying the money. It's up to $20 per month for me now.........not $10.

The $20 plan just includes more storage. Do you really need more storage, if not the $10 plan is the same I think.

My son modified an image for me on GIMP. I searched for 45 minutes for a way to save the profiles and gave up. (How hard would it have been for them to have made a menu item such as "save these profiles as..."?!

You have to use Export. Save gives you the native GIMP format (xcf)

GIMP is a good, reliable alternative to PS. You stated you are learning GIMP and are coming along well with it. So, why would you want to spend hard-earned money on a PP program when GIMP is free. If, on the other hand, GIMP falls short of your PP needs then, by all means, spend your money.

Here is a link to all the instructions on basic and technical instructions concerning GIMP. Daves Media Design on Youtube is the best teacher you will find to learn GIMP. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq79-lfj2w7oRXGRcOP2B7g

Before I was gifted a version of PS, I used GIMP. It does have a big learning curve, but it does more than I'd ever want to do. Knowing your ability and affinity for doing PP work, Brent, I honestly don't know if it will fill your needs. I think they do try to keep up with PS, but I think they have to do things differently because of copyright/patent rules. It is free, and will remain free (I hope), so that's a plus!

I would suck it up and pay Adobe $9.99/mo for the best. It's what you know, and, has many features that your stand alone version didn't have. It's always kept up to date with updates, is improved upon frequently, and if you purchase a newer camera body you will have no problems developing the supported raw files. And of course you know, it also comes with Photoshop, Bridge, & Lightroom (the light version). Seriously, $9.99 is what 2 Starbuck Venti fu fu coffee's would cost you.

I guess I am the strange bird here, I am a Linux user and have been for 30 years and have only ever used GIMP along with programs like Darktable, Raw Therapee and Digikam, all free and open source, and I find them all to be able and capable to do what I need to do. Any new software will require a learning curve and it just comes down to what time you are willing to invest to learn it. There are many youtube videos for learning GIMP as well as the others.

There are a few of us on here.

From the PC side GIMP 100% free, so aside from some HD space, you have nothing to lose by trying it.

As an aside, I used the serial # from a used 14MP Olympus Stylus that I paid $10 for to DL the 2021 version of "Olympus Workspace" which has some nice controls and effects. I could have used the serial # from my Oly mirrorless camera, but I was curious to see if an older serial worked. It did.

I referred to it on the first page, but called it "monthly impulse purchases".

Except time.

On the plus side, it's always good to be in danger of learning something new.

So you don't really have a point of comparative reference. GIMP can do a lot and yes it's reliable. But it's not competitive with commercial software if you have work to do. GIMP is slower and more frustrating to use and in the end falls short of getting the job done well. A commercial editor like PS or Affinity (right now on sale for $25.00) will be less frustrating and more productive than GIMP assuming you are a GMIP wizard level expert.

The first time you have to darken a sky that has a tree line at the horizon -- a very typical photo edit -- GIMP will let you down. You'll still be fussing with it and deciding to settle for less after a PS or AP user has finished the edit and moved on.

Exactly right. GIMP is the most expensive app being discussed here. There are different ways to measure cost.
