I had both eyes done in May. It has not had any effect on my picture taking but has made a difference in my editing. Cataracts are like having a yellow filter over your eyes. After the surgery your color vision will be improved. I had my lenses set for distance. I have glasses for reading and for the computer. I also have bifocals to accommodate both situations. I like the separate ones better.

Has anyone had cataract repair before? How did it effect your making photographs? Would the tri-focal be better than the distance focused lens?

I had both eyes done several years ago. I got the distance ones. However, due to my astigmatism, which they were unable to correct perfectly, I tend to wear my continuous bifocal spectacles as much as ever, which is to say pretty much all of my waking hours. I could drive without them, but then I'd have to mess with putting them someplace, and that's not worth it to me, and I couldn't read Google Maps for navigating to first time destinations. I could hike without them, but I'd need them to look closely at little things. I can see through the viewfinder on my DSLR without the specs, but not the live view screen or the menu. I can watch TV without them, and I can use the computer without them, but fine detail work in Photoshop requires the specs, as does reading the menu with unfamiliar features. So, like I said, the bottom line is I wear them as much as ever.

I have a friend who got both eyes done, and the biggest thing for her was colors. Here eyes had been yellowing for years, and it was as if she'd never seen colors for the last 20-30 years. My color perception wasn't that strongly affected but, had I not had it done, I'd probably be in her shoes by now, virtually color blind but not knowing it!

The people who get the lenses focused at infinity tend to be the most satisfied, and living with reading glasses isn't really that much of a pain.[/quote]

I didn't know if reverand was linked when I first asked this ... so am repeating...

You're making me wonder if I should have gone the other route. It's hard to know what one would prefer without "trying them on." My doctor said she could replace them if I wasn't happy with them. Do you have much issue with driving at night... dealing with headlights, etc.? Does your distance vision look pretty much like it did before (only sharper)?

I was near sighted and had both lenses replaced. I'm now far sighted and the best thing about it is the brilliance of colors; I had no idea what I had been missing.

The only trouble is going back and forth if you're trying to read the settings on the camera and then looking through the viewfinder without glasses!

I had one eye done about 10 years ago and the other one a couple of years later (when it was time for it). I haven't need the "laser clean-up" yet. I was given three choices (distance, "social" or reading) and chose distance and am happy I did. I use half frame reading glasses which allows me to look over the top when I'm doing such things as typing this on my laptop with the TV on. I was very surprised at how bright and white the light was after the surgery. I also have regular glasses with progressive lenses that have almost no correction on top, but allow me to read and when driving the middle part "clears up" the instrument panel. Taking photos is not a problem, as I just adjust the viewfinder to correct for my changed vision. I passed the vision test for my driver license a couple of years ago without my glasses on. I also got progressive sunglasses so I could read in the sunshine (especially important in the summer by the pool with a good book). The surgery was easy; in the surgery center around 7AM, home before noon.

My wife and I both got the multi focal lenses. I love mine. Don’t need glasses at all. I sometimes have a little problem with very fine print. When I do I use my iPhone to take a picture of it and then read it. It is great to see in the viewfinder and I have no problems seeing the menu and then my subject.

My wife just got hers recently. Her vision is good. Still improving every day. She needs another few months for her vision to get to their best.

I have a couple friends with these same lenses and they do great. One friend got them and had problems but it was due to his eyes. They replaced them with single vision lenses and he is much better now.

My sister in law had her right eye distance and left eye close up. This works for her but would not work for me. Tried it with contacts a long time ago and it was horrible for me.

Good luck. Probably any decision you make will be the right one.

I have multi focus lens in both eyes. Had them done about three years apart. The second lens is a bit brighter than the first but the work great. I don’t use glasses for anything. Speaking from my own experience, I’m really glad I spent the money for them.

The ophthalmologist recommended the same thing to me-one eye for reading and one for long distance vision. It seemed a bit ridiculous to me at the time. I also had envisioned having 20/20 vision at infinity but he pointed out that if I awoke in the middle of the night I could walk around the house without glasses and have both distant and reading vision. Naturally I have to wear glasses but I would have to wear them anyway for reading. It was a great recommendation so now I don't need my glasses to find my glasses.

While we’re talking about cataracts, one more “twist”: I had lasik twenty years ago (1995), corrected my vision from really bad - minus 7 diopter in left eye and minus 7.10 in the right, to about 20-20. Now I need cataract surgery. Does anybody know if they can do the distance correcting lenses in this kind of situation? Anybody have cataract surgery after lasik?

Having the surgery on both eyes didn't affect my photographs, but it did affect my vision - no more glasses for distance, and more accurate color. After having one eye done, I could see the difference in color between the two. Good photography is the result of using a very, very expensive camera.

I had cataract surgeries in November and last month and I had standard lenses put in (that's what Medicaid would pay for). I can see better far out of one eye than the other either due to a slight difference in lens strength or because I have astigmatisms in both eyes - don't want to go through laser surgery to fix them. Should get my new glasses in a week or so. In the meantime I just adjusted the diopter on my cameras and it seems to work out fine...I can see better, but it probably doesn't improve my photography, though :) It's nice to not have to wear glasses to read, but for some reason I can't fathom I'm getting bi-focals. The worst thing about the operations was that they had to stick me twice each time to get in an IV, and despite having to take insulin several times a day, I HATE NEEDLES!!

I had cataract surgery last summer. Wow-am I thrilled. Wore contacts all my life. I only needed regular lenses so they put in one for distance and one for close. ( My contacts were the same-one close and one far). I have 20/20 vision and do not need glasses at all. One thing I have noticed is color. I am amazed that I can see the real color of things. For example, my daughter gave me a wool scarf which I though was black, grey, and white. Turns out, it is purple. This is my cataract story.

Have any of you notice that if you had both eyes done that you now have crosshair with both eyes? When the doctors got done with my eyes I have a crosshair. There not exactly 90* to each other. Every time I see headlights coming towards me I see what appears to be cross hairs. Any body else have this wonderful result?
