I think one body is fine for most people. However, if you are going to shoot an event that is critically important to you, you should have a backup. I have been using SLRs, and now DSLRS since 1969. I had never had a problem. We arranged a "dream of a lifetime" trip to East Africa. A friend, who is a professional photographer, suggested I take an extra body because "if you have a problem on this trip, you will ask to be fed to the lions". I took his advice, and did not become lion food after my primary body and/or lens ceased functioning. It also took the manufacturer two months to repair the camera/lens combo. I guess you have to ask yourself if avoiding this is something that justifies the price of a second body to you

I have a nikon d7000 with a panasonic gx-1 for a walk around. both have advantages and disadvantages depending on what I'm doing and I use my F-1 film standby for the backcountry hunting, hiking, rough stuff. The nikon would probably be ok but If it fell or got wet I'd cry. Interestingly enough the digitals don't perform well when the temp goes below freezing. Battery life is a big issue, and then trying to handle a camera in the cold just sucks.

I think it really depends what you are doing. If you are shooting sports, weddings I think you need a back up if you are doing photgraphy as a professional. For a hobby one camera would be enough unless like some have mentioned you have extra money lying around then buy another body to make your life easier. I shoot Indy Car racing so I need two cameras becasue I don't have the time to change lens becasue of the speed of the cars.

Question for anyone and everyone, I'm a SLR guy and I got familiar with it and find i can rip off a dozen pic's making changes to setting to get the desired effects without a problem. When I am using my digital nikon i find myself disabling most of the Auto stuff because I just find myself disappointed with the settings the camera picks. Does anyone else find themselves disabling the Auto?

As well as a hobby, I shoot the occasional wedding where I need 2 cameras. I use a 5D mk iii as my work horse and a 5D as my back up. Before I bought the mk iii, the 5 D was the workhorse. Before that, it was a 20D etc...

As I've moved on the cameras have been passed on to the kids.

I personally use one camera, I have a Nikon 28-300mm lens and that takes care of most any circumstance. It's a little heavier but I'd rather carry that than an extra camera or several lenses, I also have a Sigma 50-500 lens that I take with me but unless I'm going for extra long shots it stays in my truck.

I asked a week ago about how many of you have twin (or close to it) DSLRs. New question. How many of you get by just fine with one DSLR?

Hi Jerry.

I use two, the Canon t1i and the XS. I shoot some large events (volunteer) and I do a combination of stills and video for my edits of these events. The
XS being a still camera only I carry the t1i set to video and leave it there.

I use an add on view finder with the t1i making it an excellent video camera. This way I don't have to switch the t1i back and forth all the time.

Normally, to really answer your question, I only use the t1i.

Jerry,

Every time I upgraded I kept the newest one as a backup. I now have a Canon 7D and a 50D. Depending on where I am at and what I am doing, I normally have both with me. If I am at Forsythe, the 8 mile loop, I have both sitting next to me with different lenses loaded. I do have to admit for wildlife 95% of the time I use the 7D.

I also have to admit I could make do with one body but like having a spare next to me.

I've got a 30D, 5DII and a 1Ds II... Most of my work is on the 5DII, I do in house portrait work on the 1DsII and nasty stuff for the newspaper on the 30D...However, I don't like having three systems to keep track of. I love the 5DII and most of the way it is designed.
So...I'm getting ready to sell the 1DsII and replace it with the new 5DIII. Then after I've decided I like the 5DIII I plan to sell the old 30D and replace it with another 5DIII. That will move the 5DII down to the newspaper---it's raining...something is blowing up...there's a fire...etc. camera... I really look forward to having a pair of cameras with the same operating system....
I hasten to add that all three cameras will have the battery grip with two batteries in play and the vertical dupe controls....doesn't get much better than that...love the grips...

The questioner only wanted to know if one carried more than one camera, not which camera(s) you have?

In response, I carry my P&S all the time. If I'm going out specifically to take pictures, I'll carry one DSLR with my P&S.

I own two different DSLR's. Am planing to purchase another different DSLR and a bridge camera. None of the cameras are the same; their dials are/and will be different. No big deal.

I want different bodies for different features (photos) and for different lens.

I've thought about getting the grips, but I've never run out of battery power, and I take portrait mode shots OK. Besides, the cameras (D7000, D600) are big enough as it is.

Yes I only ever shoot manual, once I had learnt my camera and all the settings manual was the only way to go
