We stayed a couple nights in Stephen Foster State Park in Georgia. It is inside the Okefenokee Swamp, and has great up close encounters with wildlife. No staff interaction during the covid, but they rented us a skiff and we puttered around in the classic cypress swamp forest.

Charleston, SC is VERY photogenic, as is Savannah, GA & everything in between, (if you want to go ALL the way east.) Smoky Mountains National Park in East TN. Everglades National Park in South FL. St Mark's National Wildlife Refuge, about 25 miles south of Tallahassee, FL. St Augustine, FL is also very photogenic. Have fun & stay safe. Lo

If your route took you to Virginia, the Luray Caverns (already mentioned) is nice. Might go through Colonial Williamsburg (very historic). There is an interesting Tank Museum in Danville, Virginia. The Richard Petty Museum in southern North Carolina is good, too. There's a nice motorcycle museum on US-64 near Ashboro, NC.
Stopping in Auburn, Indiana there are 2 vehicle museums adjacent to each other, the main one being the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum in the old Auburn factory. And, of course, at Dayton, Ohio is the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
I made a trial route on Streets & Trips including those places -- it's about 2100 miles and would take several days, depending on how long you stayed in each place. It's definitely not a straight shot, but not nearly as off course as going to Arizona would be.

Stop at the ark encounter just south of Cincinnati Ohio.. beautiful exhibit with lots of photo opportunity

If you have time stop at the Savannah Georgia beautiful Old City lots of history.
While in that area visit saint Simons island in Jekyll island. Jekyll island has some great golf if you like that sort of thing.
When you get to Florida stop in St Augustine Florida very old city if not the oldest city in the United States

Charleston SC is a great place to visit. Nice places to spend the night too. If you like history, you can find it there.

The op didn't say exactly when this trip was but the Blue Ridge Parkway closes in winter if there is snow and there is now. The entire North Carolina parkway is closed at the moment as well as a good stretch of the southern Virginia section.

A number of years ago I drove from Chicago to Dayton, OH. While driving through central (I think) Indiana I was struck by the # of windfarms....literally hundreds of turbines for miles. And depending on your route, if interested in Civil War stuff, the Battlefield and surrounding area at Vicksburg.

With all these suggestions in place, make sure you have a working GPS to get you there and back. Don’t forget your cell phone. I hope your have AAA. This can come in handy if your car doesn’t want to go anywhere any more. But you can get free maps and free TripTiks to help you along the way. They can guide you from place to place. Plan your itinerary. But more important be safe.
And don’t forget to share photos!!
