You could follow the coast. The North Carolina outer banks are great for photography as is Charleston South Carolina, and Savannah Georgia.

As another has suggested Luray Caverns and Biltmore Estate is very interesting.

There are two I also recommend, as well as Blue Ridge Parkway and/or Skyline Drive.

Smoky Mountains National Park. Cade's cove in the park. All kinds of trails too. Some very easy trails going to some very beautiful places and areas. And lots of historical places. Civil War places. If far enough east, the outer banks of North Carolina. It is quite a bit built up now, but there are still some areas of sheer beauty and solitude. Have a safe and fun trip going this way or that way.

Some useful suggestions here for folk who do road trips.

With all these suggestions in place, make sure you have a working GPS to get you there and back. Don’t forget your cell phone. I hope your have AAA. This can come in handy if your car doesn’t want to go anywhere any more. But you can get free maps and free TripTiks to help you along the way. They can guide you from place to place. Plan your itinerary. But more important be safe.

And don’t forget to share photos!!

Have a great time!!

Ancient suggestions... Google maps is your new friend... does anybody use paper maps any longer? I haven't used one in about 10 years.

AAA Trip Tiks is on line now. Yes, Google maps is very good. But, in my opinion, AAA Trip Tiks is just a bit better. It tends to actually offer more in one spot. Just use the AAA app and set the route. Look for and add in any other things you want to do along the way.

Yes. Google Maps and similar apps are great when trying to find a strange address (has anyone else ever driven in a major city looking for an address with a map open on their lap trying not to die in a car crash?), But the huge advantage of paper maps when planning a trip is the ability to see both the big picture and the smallest detail simultaneously, something you just can’t do on an LCD display without constant zooming and panning. I still keep my collection of paper maps from all over the US in a file cabinet and a handful in my car’s glovebox, although I certainly use my phone (with audio directions) for navigating while driving.

I see you already have a lot of answers but I will offer some ideas.

Natural Tunnel State Park in VA. If you are camping, it has a camp ground.

Powell Valley Overlook in VA

High Knob Observation Tower, VA

I always enjoy tourist trains. The scenery is never disappointing. Pick a town and find a train ride. The ones that are running have COVID precautions in place.

The Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel is fun to drive through. But not during rush hour traffic.

If you drive through Savannah GA, Huey's on the River has the best fried green tomatoes on the planet.

Take back roads and not major highways. Going slower will give you better gas milage too.
