JDM, I'd suggest a NAS unit (Network Attached Storage). That along with some backup software would be suitable for quite a bit of time into the future. I'd get one that is expandable. That way as you increase your amount of files, you can add more drives.

I've not heard of that! I 'll definitely look into this. Thanks, rmalarz. ~JDM

I’m looking for help to add additional storage and backup for my lightroom catalogue. (My apologies in advance for not being that technical … hence why I’m reaching out to you.)

I’ve been shooting with Nikon D750 and just got the D850 for Christmas. Due to the file size of the images of the 850, I started thinking about (and worrying about) storage, which got me then thinking about backup, too. I fear that both situations are inadequate.

Here’s my setup:
~MacBook Pro (2019)
~Lightroom Photoshop with all images stored on external drive (WD 2TB My Passport Ultra; 7000+ images)
~Backup to Time Machine on external drive (again a WD 2TB My Passport Ultra … I’ve assumed all along that this backs up my lightroom catalogue residing on the other external drive … is that true?)

Please advise on storage space and backup with any/all recommendations. I am an Amazon Prime Member so I have access to their free storage. I have OneDrive and storage on Microsoft360. I’d also be willing to subscribe to a backup service if it makes the most sense. I have no idea how to go about copying or uploading my lightroom catalogue from the external hard drive to a new backup location.

I know I’m asking a lot. I’m hoping there’s a kind soul out there in the mood to take on a challenge!

Many thanks for your help and patience!

Wow I can't believe you have asked these questions, I have exactly the same problems and issues and being not technically minded I find it all a jungle to my brain capacity. Thank you for asking the questions, mine would have been identical.

Aside from the mostly excellent advice you've already received here, may I suggest that you turn on "automatically write metadata changes into xmp" in Lightroom's Edit->Catalog Settings->Metadata tab. This will create a tiny "sidecar" file that has the same filename as your image file with an ".xmp" extension. This file contains all of your metadata and represents a snapshot of the changes. So even if you for some reason lose your catalog to file corruption or accidental deletion, you won't lose your edits.

I backup all the photo files from my computer to both an external drive and to the "cloud".

I use a simple backup software (app) called SyncBack to do the backups to the external drive unattended regularly (you can specify the frequency, I use daily). It is smart enough after the 1st backup to only update files that have changed or been added so it doesn't take forever for updates.

Since I have Amazon Prime, I use Amazon Photos, a "cloud" solution, which is free if you have Prime . A cloud solution is the only way to recover from a true disaster like fire, hurricane or tornado, or any major tragedy.

This software appears to require a $29.95 per year subscription - I think the latest version - V11 - is a free trial for 1 month. Anyone know if, at the end of subscription or if SyncBack disappears, is the data stored still accessible or does their encryption process mean all of your backups are are inaccessible? This product seems to be what I need and price is OK, (2 PCs, 8 hard drives) but I like to know if the files can be transferred to other back up vendors if needed.

I have a 7 bite external hard drive I store all my pictures on plus when I download the to my computer I put them on a DVD as well. I'm not familiar with MacBook's but I would thing you could plug a external hard drive in a USB port

I have 3 external drives (4TB). One is my master which has everything. Next one I do a monthly backup of changes....Third one is a backup to that.

I am not familiar with Mac, but here is what I recommend. Use large external hard drives (buy ones larger than you think you might need now) and manually backup your images using a good backup software. I also use SynchBack. Make at least two copies of your images. Three is better. Once copies are made, turn off the external hard drives (and possibly unhook them) to protect them from power blips, etc. Use the cloud too if that works for you.

Buy a UPS device (universal power source) and plug your Mac into it as well as your external drives. This device will help protect your electronic devices from power spikes, etc.

Backup software programs usually allow for full backups or mirror backups or both. I use both with synchback. Google these terms so you know the difference.

Right now I am using external drives with 12 to 16 TB capacity and the drives are in hard drive enclosure cases.

Just a comment. Don’t expect much power spike protection from the UPS - consumer UPSs are no better than a cheap surge protector - they both use simple MOVs which degrade over time.

I take lots of pictures. about 1000 a day every day for five months. I am shooting a Canon 1DX and a 1DX Mark III, and also a 7DII. I shoot Raw, CF2 and CF3, and jpegs I dont waste time deleting files. storage is simply too cheap to spend hours deleting. I have a 2013 MacPro with 1 terabyte HD.
When I get in from the field, I insert the cf and CF express cards into the readers. they show up on the desktop. I have two 8 terabyte backups, and a big server, remotely hooked with an Ethernet cable. Opening the card by double clicking, I select copy and then paste the images to each of the hard drives and the server and one desk top forlder . A new folder for each day, doing this every day it's not too time consuming. I also have one folder per month on the desk top. This is the folder I work with. I use bridge to sort the images marking the ones I want to keep with a color. First I mark all the good images with red (6) then later mark the better images with yellow (7) I can then check mark the others and delete them all at once

There is lots of good advice here so I won't repeat it. It is often summarized as Originals Plus 2 local backup plus an off site or cloud backup. Storage is cheap enough so that it is rarely a haddship to follow such a plan.
What I would add is that if your Lightroom Catalog or other library is large enough that it needs to be stored on an external (rather than your internal SSD) that is where people often run into issues with slower performance.
If you have a computer with Thunderbolt 3 buy one of the new M2 solid state drives OWC and others make them.
Their throughput is on the order of 10x the average of the shelf USB3 drive.
But only do it if you need it. Smaller libraries often work fine on regular drives.

I have a very similar settup to yours. I have an iMac, and three external WD drives: 4TB for the images up through 2018, and 8TB for images thereafter, and a 14TB that Time Machine uses to back up the 4TB, the 8TB, and the internal HD. In addition, I use Backblaze, a cloud system that backs up everything but the 14TB Time Machine drive pretty much continuously (except of course when I shut the machine down for the night).

I once had a catastrophic failure of the 8TB and the Time Machine backup. Almost had to lock me up I was so frantic. Then, I got myself together, got in touch with Backblaze, and they sent me a hard drive with everything that had been on that 8TB. Meanwhile, I got two new drives, and by the end of the week - yes, within 7 days - I was back in business. And, while I waited, I could download files from Backblaze, although it was no way to operate for long.

I don't use Lightroom, so I cannot say where your catalogue will end up, nor whether Backblaze will back it up. As I understand it, it won't make a mirror of your internal drive, so if that goes, you'll have to go to Apple and your other software providers to get those pieces back in service.

An excellent choice. It will take awhile (depending on your upload speed) to “seed” the cloud, but once done, updates, which consist of changes and new files, will be much shorter. You can sleep easier knowing that your data is safe.

Trix....when backing up to Amazon...are files that you delete in your workflow (that you previously loaded to Amazon) deleted on your Amazon copy?
