The 24-105 is a good all around lens...the sigma version would be my choice.

No a Nikon lens. Canon makes on for Canon, and Sigma makes one in Nikon mount.

Before looking for advice on what lens to get, you may want to reveal what subjects you like to shoot. Otherwise you are going to get a lot of "shotgun" suggestions that may not be the best solution. Otherwise look at:

https://www.opticallimits.com/

https://photographylife.com/lenses

To get a start on looking at reviews from respected and fairly impartial evaluations.

I'd suggest https://www.dxomark.com/category/camera-reviews/ but their reviews are unconventional, and try to provide more of a subjective approach, using testing data. It takes a little bit of effort to understand their system, but it is pretty valuable nonetheless.

The last thing you want is someone suggesting something because they get good results with it, but not representative of what you may experience.

Since you have a full frame camera, let us take advantage of that.

Hi group,
I'm with chase4. I love my Nikkor 28-200 mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED. It's an older lens that can be had for $80 - $250 on eBay. I keep one on my grab-n-go camera which is currently a D7100 but it also spends a lot of time on my D700 and D750 FF cameras as well. It's sharp and focuses to 18" all through the zoom range. I love it for much of my larger-size-flowers photography. Take care & ...

I do shoot the D700. I got mine with the 24-120 3.5 vr. Many people don't like it, but Nikon coupled it with the D700 as their kit lens. I actually have a lot of good shots with the combination. The f4 version is better. The f4 focuses faster and produces better sharpness on the corners. The f3.5 is lighter, smaller, cheaper, and better balanced on the D700. Some day I might pick up the f4 model. Instead when I want a higher end lens I use the Nikon 24-85 vr. Great lens: its light, well balanced, fast, cheap, and sharp. I use it a lot instead of my large and heavy 28-70 f2.8. It all depends on what your needs and pocket book allows you to chose.

For my D610 my got to lens is the Nikor 28-300. It has proven to be an excellent all around lens; possibly a little soft in some situations but overall excellent (see Ken Rockwell review). Recently I added a Nikor 16-35 and I must admit that I am having a most enjoyable time with it and plan to use it extensively in the future.

For outdoor shooting, I suggest the Nikon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 G lens and maybe the Nikon 70-200mm f4 for your D 700. I do not think you need to spend $xxxxx for a 24-70mm f2.8

For indoor or low light shooting having a fast prime lens is always a plus. And these are not that expensive:
Nikon 50mm f1.8; Nikon 35mm f1.8 . Or the Sigma Art series prime lenses like the 24mm, 35mm or 50mm.

The 24-120 f4 is an excellent lens, and it covers almost everything a carry around should. Very sharp wide open throughout the zoom range.

Whatever lens you buy, its your view, your cropping that counts, not the lens !

Nikon doesn't make a 24-105. The current 24-120 F4 with VR is vastly superior to the older F3.5-5.6.

You are correct and I knew that. I mistyped.

Using a DX lens designed for the smaller format sensor of DX cameras on an FX, so-called “full-frame” camera like the D700 will likely result in severe vignetting at the shorter focal lengths.

A good and not expensive Nikon lens for the D700 would be one of the 24-85mm lenses, preferably the most recent “G” version. They’re easy to find snd are sharp and lightweight.

Thumbszupp on the 24-85 VR.

Wanting three basic primes with VR, I managed to acquire the normal and the 100 with VR, but nobody makes a 24 or a 28 for Nikon with VR ... so I chose the 24-85 VR to fill that slot. Not what I had intended but I’m very glad I have it.

On its own, ignoring my desire for three basic primes, the 24-85 proved to be my perfect “Goldilocks” lens ... even though I also have a 24-120/4.0, which I would agree is just a bit hefty (for my D750).
