The most ideal lens for general purpose use on a D700 would have to be the Nikkor 24-120 f4 G. That lens is plentiful if you want used, and new can be had at reasonable rates. That gives you wide angle to medium telephoto in a small package on the D700. Be sure it is the f4 model. The f3.5-5.6 versions are NOT any good, I tried all 3 of them for myself.
Hi there, Yes, the D700 offers this option, but as it was stated, it reduced the quality of the photo.
As for all around good lens, I would recommend the Nikkor 35-70mm F2.8D. Old lens with superb performance.
