The kit lens that came with my D7000 worked out perfectly. It is an 18 to 105mm DX. Work out the numbers for your FX camera on what's available. That zoom lens works for over 90% of my needs.

Good luck and be safe, Alan

The OP is referring to the D700, not the D7000.

One of Nikon's 24-105 variants is a good match for this camera.

Carl - Do you have a Nikon D700 or the D7000? If indeed you have the D700 then I recommend the Nikkor 28-200 mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED. They are an older lens, no longer in production, but can be found used for very little $$. Best, chase

The math works out to about 27-160 for FX. PM me and I’ll offer you my extra Sigma (super affordable in great shape).

Read it twice, and slow down. Then you’ll see what was actually written.

If I only wanted one lens, it would be the 28 to 300 Nikon lens. It is reasonably sharp all the way through. In addition, it will close focus at less than 12 inches at all focal lengths, eliminating the need for a macro lens. A butterfly at 300mm from a short distance will fill the frame nicely. At 28mm, it doesn't provide the same sweeping landscape view a 24mm lens would (my favorite length for landscape), but it comes close enough that with only one lens, it will do nicely.

Okay, Mr. UserID. I've read it twice and no matter how much I slow down, I read Nikon D700. What do you want me to see?

User - Sounds like the OP may not know or realize how using A DX lens on A FX body reduces the area covered on the FX sensor. Most of the newer Nikon FX bodies have a mode that the shooter can select in the camera to shoot DX format but at the loss of many pixels. I do not know if a D700 has this option. chase

The D7000 is a crop sensor camera. The D700 is FX. That lens would be entirely inadequate for the D700's capabilities.

A good all-around lens, which is one I've used on my D700 is the Nikkor 28~300.
