My grandson, 8 1/2, just got the Nikon B500 (Red!). Believe it or not, he picked it out. He's going away for a few days with his family and will use it....mostly incorrectly. He has agreed to do 'out-school' with Poppy (that's me!).
So, starting next week, we will be doing lessons, using his pictures as examples. The first thing I needed to show him when he got the camera was that the camera strap goes around his neck the first thing when he pics up the camera. If not, you will find a B500 in pieces..sooner than later.
Enjoy your time together!

Olympus tough. Get a used one, any model. Great for kids (and adults). Doesn’t have a great zoom but it’s indestructible. Just have to get a screen protector for the back, it can get scratched. And kids love to take pix in the water! It’s as simple or complex as you want.

I agree, for the age I think an Olympus TG-5 or 6 would be a better choice.

A couple contributors have suggested the Olympus TG-5 or 6. I totally agree! Rugged so can take a little banging around, good size for young hands, ... lots of reasons why a good fit. And you might be able to borrow it occasionally!

Check this one out.

Easy on the pocketbook and 16mp at that.

One thing beyond the camera is the post photo activity. Will the 9 year old be able to down load, file and retrieve the photos. That is one of the advantages of a cell phone (which I don't recommend), it makes the child look cool like one of the crowd that has a phone and can show photos to friends anytime. That said, if you get a cell phone the kid may never progress into the actual camera world, they will just buy better phones. You have some good suggestions on basic cameras, I just suggest you think beyond the taking photos process.

On her 9th birthday, i gave my daughter a Nikon D3300 with an 18-55 stock lens, a Tamron 70-300 and some add-on macro lens.
The built-in guide mode made me choose it, aside from she can grow with it and i own other advanced Nikon cameras that i can pass on later.

Shes now 13 and wifey had been telling me their media club mentor had already chosen her to be the next media club president. Sadly it was suspended as the covid caused everyone to do online class.

Leica is coming out with some really nice cameras that would do justice to a nine-year old. ‘shouldn’t need more than two or three lenses to do the little bugger justice.

Beginner and wildlife perhaps something in the line of the Sony A-9II, Canon EOS-1DX mk II, Nikon D6 etc...
Of course you wouldn't buy one of these camera for the 9 year old but what you should do is that as beginner one should be content to take ordinary pictures of grandpa and grandma and not to pursue wild life photography right out from the start.
After 40 plus years of doing photography I still don't have either the skill or equipment to do wildlife photography. I learned to limit the types of subjects to what I can do with my equipment.

i would look at your local craigslist.com and try to find an inexpensive bridge camera in good shape. Any one of them has enough features and capabilities to start in photography. If the interest is maintained - who knows the interest span of a nine year old - then buy one of the DSLR starter packages as a special present.

I bought one for my granddaughter and soon discovered that by comparison I have no creativity at all.

Good idea. It looks like a real camera, it's easy to use, and it has a great zoom range. For the price, it's a perfect choice.

I agree with this. My son just bought the B500 for his GF who wanted to learn. She takes it everywhere and loves it. Great to learn on. Has enough for them to get started and takes nice pictures and has a good zoom. You can't go wrong for the money.

Budget is the first consideration. Fortunately, you can't buy a bad camera. Smaller would be better than bigger, unless the young photographer likes all the technical features. I always look for refurbs first. I've also bought quite a few used cameras.

I'd say the first consideration after price, was the size he/she would like. One lens or interchangeable. I'd lean toward a compact with one permanent lens.

I recommend you follow the K.I.S.S. principle. Keep it simple... Be prepared to provide help and don't get the child a camera that your afraid he/she will break.

I have a Nikon D5100 with 18-55mm & 55-300mm AFS lenses in excellent condition, for $300. Reason is my wife wants me to trim down my Nikon DSLRs inventory (D610, D750, D810, D4, D500).
PM me if you're interested at daiqngo@gmail.com

I would suggest a refurbished Canon SX60 or SX50 HS.
