I would not recommend that one, I prefer one with not only Auto but Tv, Av, and M modes for future growth.

A 9-year old is not going to bother with manual or semi-manual features. They just want to shoot and capture moments and interesting things they see - without the hassle of analyzing light or contemplating depth of field. A 12- or 13- year old, perhaps. But until then, an Auto-only camera will serve nicely for the next few years.

Agree - that's why I said for future growth.

I understand. But I think it is smarter to wait until the child is mature enough to take advantage of a camera with advanced features. Children at a young age are typically not very careful with their stuff. Cameras are dropped, forgotten at the playground, placed in the dirt, exposed to rain or snow, covered in sticky candy, etc. For a 9-year old, an inexpensive limited feature auto camera that is super easy to use is the best choice. The child will be plenty happy, and you won't get too upset should the camera end up destroyed or lost only a few months later.

Actually, an Olympus TG-4, 5 or 6 might be better suited for a young photographer.

I agree, for the age I think an Olympus TG-5 or 6 would be a better choice.

I just bought a TG 6 and for how a young person will handle it would be excellent choice. Ask parents how many cell phones their children have gone through

I would suggest a Nikon Z7 (or Canon/Sony equivalent) with the holy trinity of lenses and the stipulation that you get to store it for her.

Having taught 9th grade after my retirement from industry, I found that cameras of any type were out... historic relics. The students lived by cellphone photography. Eventually, get them clip-on lenses.

Teach composition and teach how to download for eventual editing. Most important is the storage for their future so they can look back and laugh. More important than any camera is giving the young person praise for several from each batch they share with you.

If they get serious about photography, a small camera 1" sensor with reach, NO, not the expensive Sony, rather perhaps an older lower-cost model; I have a Panasonic TZ100 which is excellent in the pocket camera 24/7. Again, "auto" is fine, composition reigns supreme. Imperative go shooting with them at places they are interested in. The world of the young is their world and vastly different from ours and that 40#s of DSLR equipment.

The Pentax X5 has been discontinued for a while now, unless, he is considering used. The K70 with the 18 to 135mm makes a great beginner's kit, but we don't know the OP budget. He was asked for it, but did not provided it.

Whatever the device - P&S, entry level DSLR, or phone camera - be prepared to stand by her side and mentor her every step of the way. Children need a lot of guidance and encouragement to stay engaged. As she develops more experience she will be able to do more and more on her own. Include examples of how to shoot a scene to get different effects.

while all their friends taking photos with cell phones they can use a real camera and get great results. After a while take camera off auto to use various P setting then to change shutter and f stops. gradually teach exposure triagle.
for birthday and holiday presents you can give photo related presents. books, tripod, lens. dont underestimate growth
and for bay present
