most 9 yo will also have a cell phone with camera.
A real camera will give them more flexibility than cel
The canon rebel series with kit zooms are great camera and can grow into them. 55-275 nice lens to teach wildlife composition that a cell phone could never have. Remember in bright sun tough to see screens but view finders much easier

I also have a 9 year old, actually twin 9 year old granddaughters. So, your question got me thinking about them. I called B&H and asked for recommendations. The gentleman recommended this model for the following reasons: if the goal is to learn a bit about photography, this model has variable aperture/shutter settings, an eye piece, LCD window, an awesome zoom, video, a good amount of pixels. A camera that can teach the basics, and also one you can grow into. B&H has used versions for about $225 or new at amazon for about $295.

PC Magazine rated it “excellent”.

I think we are buying one for the twins. So, thank you for inspiring me with your question...

Thank you

I would go on eBay and purchase for a very inexpensive price a Coolpix P90 which is a great camera with great zoom, but if even lower price and simplicity is needed which may be for a 8 year old get an even cheaper P80--a throw away camera. It is a great introduction to see what the kid can do and how much interest. It takes good photo and has good zoom quality. Inexpensive, light weight, nothing much lost if abused. Once you see what the kid can do then you can upgrade and if using the same system (Coolpix) it will be easy to translate the learning acquired on the P80.

I would start with her phone. Wildlife is a really tough place to start (except at a zoo) . I would start with flowers or anything that is readily available and that she can shoot every day. She will need something to view them with. You can get a Kindle for about $70.00. Fairly early on I would get her a copy or Photoshop elements or equivalent although the Kindle may have elementary editing software. For prints I would recommend a service like Costco.

Try searching on Amazon for a brand that you are comfortable with.

Wildlife photography may not be a practical goal for a 9 year old beginner, because it pretty much always requires long lenses, a very steady hand, precise timing, and a lot of PATIENCE, a quality not common in 9 year olds. It might be more realistic and productive to find another niche of photography that would interest her/him without adding the extra burdens of that specialty. A lot of kids enjoy taking photos of family, friends and pets. They may start out as routine snapshots, but your mentoring over time can help make them something more. As another contributor said, just keeping a kid interested is enough of a challenge to start with.

Consider a USED Nikon D3300, which is a great BEGINNER DSLR CAMERA. Remember; K.I.S.S.= Keep It Simple Silly.

I would not recommend that one, I prefer one with not only Auto but Tv, Av, and M modes for future growth. Much wildlife requires long effective lenses, so a mega-zoom is in order. For the same price you might try a Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ80.
