If you like the way PS works.
How does this work?

I mean that it was not easy to learn
out how to get a pic into GIMP to work on.

PS does make sense how to edit the pics.

I use darktable for most of my post work. Despite what others label as the drawbacks of freeware, it actually is very good, and there are a number of tutorials out there which I have found useful.

I can't justify the $10/month plans for anything I do.

I use photoshop elements and lightroom. I just acquired Topaz Denoise AI which I really like. Photos taken at 12800 cleaned up nicely

Picassa is free and very easy to use. I usually start with Picassa and then move on to another program if necessary.

I think it's as good as described, maybe better. There's a steep learning curve for advanced features, but I had no trouble mastering the basics and am having fun learning more.

Thank you

I use ViewNX 2, which was included with my camera. Export NEF files as 16-bit TIFF, crop as desired, print. I also have Photoshop 6, handy for cropping and converting the occasional JPEGs I get from family and friends to TIFF prior to printing. If my camera could shoot 16-bit TIFF, all I would need is software to crop, since no one format is ideal for all scenes.

Everyone's path is different. I was happy using Apple Aperture with plugins for Nik and MacPhun. I had tried PhotoShop but found it just to difficult unless I was using it every day. I had PSE but didn’t use it. Then Nik got sold to Google and Apple dropped Aperture. So I spent months looking at other options and finally selected Lightroom. It was slow at times and kept losing links to images. I spent a huge amount of time learning it. Then Adobe went to the subscription plan (SaaS pricing). I hate SaaS pricing and I was a software salesman. Not a bad deal for $10/month though I really didn’t need or want PS. So I started looking. I looked at Capture One, Affinity, Luminar 3 (the old MacPhun company), Apple Photo, PSE but finally decided on On1 Raw 2020. I love that it doesn’t have to use a catalog to do DAM but that you can just use the computer file structure so fast and no lost images. It has most of the power of ps and Lightroom to me including pano, hdr, focus stacking, raw processing, etc. It is NOT a subscription product but puts out a new version about once a year with upgrades in the $60 range but you don’t have to buy until it has features you want. I expand it by having Topaz Studio 2 for creative pp and Luminar 4 for some great features. Both of those cost me more than On1 Raw 2020 each so...

I switched from PS and LR several years ago to ON1 Photo Raw and am very happy. They are growing and building new capabilities every year and have the best training, learning and user community I have encountered.

Is Affinity as good as lots of folks are using it here on the UHH say. I missed getting it for $25.00 last month. Is the learning curve reasonably easy to learn?

You can download a free 90 day trial. It is still for sale at $24.95 until the middle of June, I believe.

It is free and easy to use, but as they say, you get what you pay for. Picasa has very limited functionality. Its great for some newbies or for those not really interested in spending the time or money learning full featured software, but is not a good choice for serious post processing.

Since the late 1990s I have used lots of software for my full time photography career. Had PS 6 but have transitioned to Affinity Photo and haven’t found it to be missing anything I need...highly recommend it.
Have recently added ON1 2020. ON1 handles blown highlights better in raw conversions than Affinity, and has an excellent DAM system for file storage and retrieval that I much prefer to Lightroom. Depending on how much post processing you do, ON1 may be all you need. Lots more choices now, but these two work well for me. Also use several Topaz AI programs, Luminar 4, Iridient Digital, Aurora HDR, etc. Could easily get by with just Affinity Photo and ON1 though.

Curious: what do you find you can't do with ON1 2020 that you can with Affinity ? I haven't run into ON1 limits yet....

Hello all.
I just got a Digital SLR this year & have always used film.
To be honest I have been scanning my negatives for years
however I never processed them.

Years ago a friend brought back a copy of PhotoShop 6.0
from Russia. I used it to repair Negatives & Slides from
the 50s to the 70s.

Today I have a bunch of programs that are free as well as
Photoshop Elements, Paint shop Pro. I have used a program
called Picasa but it's very basic for editing photos.

I'm no pro, no deadlines, no bosses. :) Just shootin pictures
for fun. With that in mind I would like to post process my photos
& be able to try some Digital art with my photos.

What do you like & use, that I hope is Free for the rest of us

Below is a picture of my favorite beach in Guam, the mold had done
a number on the slide but with PS 6.0 I was able to save it.

I have Photoshop and Lightroom package for $10.00 a month. Best bargain out there IMHO.

Welcome to UHH Marturo: I made the switch from film in 2012 and, after talking with a friend started using Graphic Converter. It was okay for about two years, but my dissatisfaction made me search for something better. I decided to try Luminar, a product of Skylum which was known as Macphun at the time. I found Luminar to be easy to learn and have been highly satisfied with the results. This interested my in Aurora, Skylum's HDR processing program. I use it sparingly for dealing with contrasty lighting situations and, while it is easy to WAY overdo things and get some pretty "well cooked" results, I have found it helpful in adjusting some photo files that were just a little "off". I recommend them to your consideration.
