One more quick note about befunky.com

Below is a screenprint of what I see when I click SAVE: note the location choices in the dropdown menu at top of page. I always choose computer. When you select computer, you then get a new window with choices of file type, name, quality... and then when you click save again, you will see the file manager of your computer. Select the folder in which you want to save the result.

Hello Linda, a question.

I have the 10/month Adobe package and do all of my D850 editing in Camera Raw as I am adverse to all of the problems associated with the Adobe file management in Lightroom and PS. As I think about making a change your comment on PS Elements caught my eye.

Does PS Elements require the import into their file system to edit the picture?
Can PS Elemants edits be saved in the original .nef format or does it create a second version in .??? making file organization and backup more complicated?

I simply manage my file organization with a date & brief description i.e. 2020-05-18 Wood Boat Trip. Most are saved in their raw format after any edits.

Your comment please.

Note your Yakima location. I lived in Federal Way for 18-years, spent many weeks making loud noise at Yakima Firing Center, and my wife was a farmer's daughter in Pasco. Now this years world's best sweet cherries from the Yakima area are arriving in Fort Myer's Costco much to my overeating pleasure.

Hello all.
I just got a Digital SLR this year & have always used film.
To be honest I have been scanning my negatives for years
however I never processed them.

Years ago a friend brought back a copy of PhotoShop 6.0
from Russia. I used it to repair Negatives & Slides from
the 50s to the 70s.

Today I have a bunch of programs that are free as well as
Photoshop Elements, Paint shop Pro. I have used a program
called Picasa but it's very basic for editing photos.

I'm no pro, no deadlines, no bosses. :) Just shootin pictures
for fun. With that in mind I would like to post process my photos
& be able to try some Digital art with my photos.

What do you like & use, that I hope is Free for the rest of us

Below is a picture of my favorite beach in Guam, the mold had done
a number on the slide but with PS 6.0 I was able to save it.

I use/used LightRoom, Raw Therapee, and I tried Gimp too. Now I use PhotoScapeX and Topaz products. The new Topaz AI programs REALLY work well, however they require a lot of computing power. So check their computer requirements carefully. Both PhotoScapeX and Topaz products work well for me. PhotoScapeX can be used accurately with 3 or 4 clicks or you can REALLY get into serious editing. Here are a couple of sites for you, Enjoy. Be sure to select Mac/or Windows. Get the free version first (it never expires), and you can always upgrade. Also, please do yourself a favor and watch the following YouTube videos to see if you would be interested and for training. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWC-SAuYOzw&t=325s Instruction and download info http://x.photoscape.org/ also https://topazlabs.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw-_j1BRDkARIsAJcfmTHPSNlPW-ZTdmAfR6Ixhv07msYDBQoE1YWNhRVrl1SCf7Jty54dAhkaApFKEALw_wcB

I also use the following freeware; Andrea Mosaic, Raw Therapee 5.3, Regi Stax 6, and Canon Digital Pro 4. Be careful if you shoot Canon Raw as few programs support Canon Raw CR2 or CR3 yet and will require you to convert your Raw files to DNG format.
We all wish you well on your photographic journey,

You didn't mention what brand of camera you use. I use Nikon so, for me, it just made sense that I would give Nikon's software a try. Some of it was free, some not but not expensive. Still use it, still like it.
When I worked, I worked in the Printing industry so I started using Photoshop long ago. Loved it, still do although my edition pre-dates yours. I use LR as well, but have not learned it as well as I should have.
Currently use Skylum products (Luminar4, Aurora, PhotoLemur) and have "dabbled" with DxO PhotoLab2 and Topaz Studio Ai2. I have found them all to be useful. I just haven't spent enough time (before C19) to learn them as well as I should.

Raw Therapee for your raw files, or Darkroom, they are both open source software and free and very good, for my jpegs I use SmartPhoto editor, a fantastic program for around 50 bucks or less.

I scrapped PS 6 and invested $49 in Affinity Photo. Fabulous program, no monthly "rentals," free upgrades -- and it does everything PS did.

I started using Irfanview about twelve years ago when I was the newsletter editor for EAA Chapter 88 in Wichita, KS. It's free, has a lot of capability, and works great.

Welcome to UHH!

Free apps have one issue: little to no support in the form of training and troubleshooting.

For $25, Serif Affinity Photo is one of the best solutions you will find. Try a free sample. Scroll to the bottom of this page:

Personally, I use the Adobe Photography Bundle ($10/month). But my needs are pro level (my career was in pro portrait labs).

Several other paid apps are available on free trial as well, but if I didn’t use Adobe apps, I’d have Affinity Photo.

My preference is Photoshop. I've used it for a number of years. I think it was 2004 when I got my first copy. Over that time, I've changed some programming to work the way I think it should. Added some things myself, etc. As such, I've no interest in moving to another piece of software and starting over again.

This is where I need help. Why do I need more than one program to edit
& one to present & keep my photos?

This Befunky strange name easy to use, this is a program that lake many
other programs has a free basic use & a pay for complete program.

Photo Shop is the one every other program is judged by. Why did they
quit selling it?

I got PS 6.0 in 2002 & used it after a quick course at the local College.
No doubt a stellar program, only I do not want a monthly rental.

If you wanted to repair Negatives & slides, PS was all I knew of in 2002.

Not all programs are the same. Some do one thing better than all the rest and another will do something else better than all the rest.

You can choose the one that works best for you. If you have trouble doing something with that program, that is the time to look at other programs.

As far as Photoshop is concerned, technically speaking, they never sold it. You could buy a license to use it. (All the software works that way).
Adobe decided to go to a subscription model because it has some advantages.
For Adobe, they get an income stream that is predictable. That helps the company continue research and development.
For the user, they get regular updates, at a price lower than what the program with all the updates used to cost.

You will be seeing other companies moving to a subscription model in the future.

If you have been using PSE and are familiar with PhotoShop 6.0 I would suggest picking up a current copy of PSE for under $100 and use it for a few years before upgrading to a more current version. I have been using PSE since 7 with good results for my personal photos. Like you I am not a pro. The monthly cost of $9.95 plus taxes comes out to more than $120 a year. I feel an expenditure of around $75.00 every three to five years is more frugal since the upgrades/updates do not usually provide that much change in the processing actions.

Is Affinity as good as lots of folks are using it here on the UHH say. I missed getting it for $25.00 last month. Is the learning curve reasonably easy to learn?

I think it's as good as described, maybe better. There's a steep learning curve for advanced features, but I had no trouble mastering the basics and am having fun learning more.
