What are you people doing about shopping? I went about a week ago, and it was unnerving. Everyone had masks, and people were skittish about being near other people. As more and more people get infected, the chances of coming across an infected person increase. We have 2,566 infections in the county, and 80 in the town where I shop. I'm down to eating dry cereal for breakfast.

We have a lot of food in the house, but some of it will need replacing. Stores have fewer and fewer employees, so there's more waiting to get the order checked out. We don't have any order-and-deliver stores around here.

Jerry, You have a Walmart Supercenter in Catskill, correct? Do they offer online grocery shopping like other Walmart's do? If they do, you can go to their website and order online from them. They will pick your order for you and notify you by email when it is ready, then you go to the store and pick it up at the dedicated entrance. When you park, there are numbered signs with a phone number to call to let them know you are there... they will ask what number spot you are parked in and bring your order out to you in plastic crates on a cart. Then you pack it in your car.

Bring your own bags though, as they did not bag the groceries, everything was just in the crates loose. Another downside is that they were out of a number of items that I needed which were listed as "in stock" when I ordered, but they did notify me of that when they emailed me the order was ready.

It's not how I normally shop or what I am used to, but that is another option and the "new norm" right now that we have to adjust to unfortunately. Will the Shoprite store in Hudson deliver to you over in Catskill, or is that too far for them to travel going across the river?

I make sure I get my ass out of bed very early on shopping days. Stores like the local grocery chain and Target are reserving first hour of some days for seniors and higher risk folks with compromised immune systems, etc., and I make sure I'm there at least 5-10 minutes before the store opens. Not only are there very few people in the store that time of morning, but you also have first shot at overnight restocking. Having a specific focus on what I've needed allowed me to nab a few small bottles of hand sanitizer during these last couple of weeks, as well as some disinfectant cleaner, and toilet paper, all of which have been out of stock for many days. To make my trip through the store faster and safer, I take a couple of big cloth shopping bags, so I can grab things, toss them in my bag, run through the checkout, and be done in less than 15 minutes. Then I toss the cloth bags in the clothes washer when I'm done unpacking them. If you have hard to get items, doing this a few days in a row also allows you a better chance in a store that has been restocked overnight.

You're lucky! On Senior days, here, people are lining up at least an hour before the store opens. Everyone of us older folks are masked and with carts distances are maintained. Smith's (Kroger) has had the best stock but "the early bird gets the worm"! Albertsons and Vons suck!!! Crappy stock and overpriced.

Walmart offers a simple and straight forward way. You need to create an account, find the store in your area and then select from the menus, food, electronics etc.
Then you type in what your looking for in the search bar. Example: spaghetti sauce.
All the choices in the store will display etc etc. It will further tell you if available or out of stock. Many other chains have the same platforms. I order from Walmart, my wife from Hy Vee. You set up a pick up or delivery time and pay with the card. Fini

The company will have to meet the competition or it will fail. Management remains the problem meanwhile. A business-like letter addressed to the CEO may bring the nuts-and-bolts problems to his attention. Underlings likely won't do it.

Our Hannaford in southern New Hampshire is still offering the service but when I try to use it, they're completely booked for the next two days and they won't allow customers to select a pick-up time beyond those two days. I've yet to figure out how to book a pick up time. Makes me wonder if maybe they're not providing the service but want the good will offering the service on line brings them.

Being on self-quarantine as an older, high risk viral candidate has not been easy. My experience with grocery store order on-line with delivery has been awful. Of 30 items ordered, only 2 were in stock. A bank hold of $117.00 actually turned out to be $48.00. The hold took 2 days to clear. Of the $48.00 actually spent, $32.00 was actually for food items ordered. The rest was delivery fee and a tip. What a rip off. Store shelves apparently were barren. Book keeping is a nightmare as the tip is not included on the receipt. On a good note, saving money has become a lot easier. Stay safe everyone.

In-store shopping isn't much better. Lots of empty shelves. I'm guessing the problem is with middlemen, but some item may not be available anywhere in the chain. My wife had to wait a week to find any flour anywhere.

Regardless, do stay safe everyone.

Yeah, I'm too lazy to go out and get the virus. If I weren't so lazy I'd be out there shopping and deep breathing the virus particles emitted by asymptomatic infected persons not wearing lazy masks.

Very selfish. If you don't go out and contract the virus how do you expect to share it? Weren't we all taught by our parents that sharing is a good thing.

Actually, my grandmother who grew up half starved, slaving in a Ukranian sweat shop, taught me NOT to share.

and the real problem today is still spending what money we do have, but trying to have some to buy food tomorrow.

I go to the store about once a week and try to support local restaurants by purchasing take out about one per week. There are only a few cases in my county and I live in the middle of 60 acres of farmland.

It may help to know only 0.0014% of humanity has died from COVID-19. 17 million people die each each year from other infectious diseases. This is about 148 times the COVID deaths.

I fear the deaths from poverty, starvation, suicide, etc. caused by government restrictions. Only time will tell where more lives are lost.

I’m not sure where your ‘infectious diseases’ total comes from. For the US, the hard-count of Covid-19 deaths in three months is getting close to the estimated flu total for six months, and in my state has already passed twice the hard-count of flu deaths. I don’t have to worry about dying from obscure causes such as Ebola, but I certainly do have reasons to be concerned about Covid-19.

Totally agree: "We need to start taking this (the Chinese virus) seriously."

This is the last time you'll have to listen to me rant about this... (the "Chinese virus) !

I was introduced to UHH by a young 25 year old girl who lives in Florida. She's a professional photographer. During the football season she shoots for the Miami Dolphins, the US Tennis Open and for the Orlando Pride Women's Professional Soccer Team. She can only shoot on weekends though because she is also a full time medical student. Right now, with classes cancelled because of Covis-19 she can't go to school. So she does volunteer work at a medical facility doing testing for the virus, just to try and help out. Doesn't get paid for it, but she works there every day, seven days a week from noon to 5PM, just because she feels that she should " do her part" to help Americans stricken with the virus . I think she's one hell of a gal.

She's also my adopted Chinese daughter.

Yesterday about 10:30 in the morning she called me. She was crying. She had driven to a Public's grocery store to do some food shopping. As soon as she got out of her car some asshole stopped his pickup, got out and started screaming at her that she should " Go back to China and take her fucking virus with her ! " He then threw a rock at her. She was so scared that she didn't notice where he actually got the rock but he had one and threw it at her. Fortunately it missed her but it did hit and broke the windshield of her car. Naturally she was petrified and ran across the parking lot to get away from him. Wasn't necessary though as he got back into his truck and drove off.

Ever since our wonderful president and his administration began insisting that they call the virus the "Chinese Virus " instead of the Coronavirus or the Covis-19 in an obvious, blatant attempt to blame the Chinese people for some of their own shortcomings lots of other folks have followed suite. As a result the number of hateful verbal and physical attacks on Chinese has GREATLY increased. That's not an opinion... that's a fact ! Maybe a lot of folks have just got their head up their ass and don't realize what they're doing or maybe they just don't give a damn.

But those of you who who insist on perpetuating the president's racist BS.... You just keep it up. You keep on calling it the " Chinese Virus " and see if you can't help him spread more hate. You're doing wonders towards uniting a very divided country. Oh, and you should be thankful that it's not YOUR daughter that's being subjected to your racist attitude.

You keep it up, but me...I'm outta here !

My wife and I must stay in the house, we fight like cats and dogs but we have fun making up by kissing each other, after all we are both in our middle eighties and we are limited in our activities. Life is beautiful but different now days, we are thankful for all of the angels working in hospitals and others trying to save life’s. I spent a lot of time enjoying of what all of you have to say at H.H. There is a lot to read here and a lot to learn, stay healthy we will overcome. John
