This is the last time you'll have to listen to me rant about this... (the "Chinese virus) !

I was introduced to UHH by a young 25 year old girl who lives in Florida. She's a professional photographer. During the football season she shoots for the Miami Dolphins, the US Tennis Open and for the Orlando Pride Women's Professional Soccer Team. She can only shoot on weekends though because she is also a full time medical student. Right now, with classes cancelled because of Covis-19 she can't go to school. So she does volunteer work at a medical facility doing testing for the virus, just to try and help out. Doesn't get paid for it, but she works there every day, seven days a week from noon to 5PM, just because she feels that she should " do her part" to help Americans stricken with the virus . I think she's one hell of a gal.

She's also my adopted Chinese daughter.

Yesterday about 10:30 in the morning she called me. She was crying. She had driven to a Public's grocery store to do some food shopping. As soon as she got out of her car some asshole stopped his pickup, got out and started screaming at her that she should " Go back to China and take her fucking virus with her ! " He then threw a rock at her. She was so scared that she didn't notice where he actually got the rock but he had one and threw it at her. Fortunately it missed her but it did hit and broke the windshield of her car. Naturally she was petrified and ran across the parking lot to get away from him. Wasn't necessary though as he got back into his truck and drove off.

Ever since our wonderful president and his administration began insisting that they call the virus the "Chinese Virus " instead of the Coronavirus or the Covis-19 in an obvious, blatant attempt to blame the Chinese people for some of their own shortcomings lots of other folks have followed suite. As a result the number of hateful verbal and physical attacks on Chinese has GREATLY increased. That's not an opinion... that's a fact ! Maybe a lot of folks have just got their head up their ass and don't realize what they're doing or maybe they just don't give a damn.

But those of you who who insist on perpetuating the president's racist BS.... You just keep it up. You keep on calling it the " Chinese Virus " and see if you can't help him spread more hate. You're doing wonders towards uniting a very divided country. Oh, and you should be thankful that it's not YOUR daughter that's being subjected to your racist attitude.

You keep it up, but me...I'm outta here !
This is the last time you'll have to listen to me ... (show quote)

Sorry about the idiot. But you calling our president racist is almost as bad.

It IS a Chinese virus. Viruses are often named by where they started.

Does the virus have almond shaped eyes, black hair, yellow skin? Or is its scientific name Covid-19?

What happened to this man's daughter is not an isolated incident.

Attacks on Asian Americans skyrocket to 100 per day during coronavirus pandemic
Representative Judy Chu said that reports of bigotry and hate crimes against Asian Americans have surged during the coronavirus crisis.

MSNBC played footage of a man violently demanding an Asian man on the New York subway move away from him. Chu condemned the footage and added that, across the nation, similar attacks have occurred, citing a man being assaulted in New York for wearing a face mask, the stabbing of three Chinese-Americans at a Sam’s Club in Texas, an Asian man in San Francisco attacked while collecting cans, and a 16-year-old Asian American sent to the hospital after school bullies accused him of carrying the coronavirus.

“These are very, very alarming and are not helped by President Trump who calls this the ‘Chinese virus,’ ” Chu said.

Question: So what do we call the virus that according to most evidence started in Kansas??

Answer: Spanish flu

The Spanish were the only ones honest enough to admit having been wiped out by it, but evidence today is that it started at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Lets stop playing politics with the Covid-19 - it is way too serious for that.

No excuses for idiots.

It is anti American to support the Chinese government who foisted this on the world by lying, cover up, and causing the WHO to lie. And then interdicted PPE shipments to US.

No surprise you use the fake news MSNBC link. Likely pure BS.

Blaming this on Trump is about as racist as you can get! And pure nonsense.

Foisted this on the world? Like it was intentional? Surely you can’t be serious. Go ahead, post the evidence of the “cover up” and the WHO “lie”. I could easily criticize the administration’s response, but I choose to treat this as a medical issue, not a political one - why don’t you just drop the finger pointing, politicization of EVERYTHING and the polarization and just concentrate on sharing beneficial information and staying alive?

Chinese virus numbers in U.S. (As of 4-12-2020)

525,704 Cases
20,486 Deaths
328,200,000 U.S. population
0.01% Percentage of deaths among total population
3.90% Death rate percentage among cases
=====
Note that the 0.01 percentage includes people who take few or no precautions. We may presume the percentage becomes smaller for those people who do take precautions.

The 3.90 percentage includes mostly older people with underlying medical conditions whose immune system cannot tolerate the virus and its effects. This percentage goes way down for healthy, younger people.
-----
Now consider this language: "Flu season in the US, which runs from October through May, claims tens of thousands of lives every year. This season CDC estimates that, as of mid-March, between 29,000 and 59,000 have died due to influenza illnesses." (found at: https://www.health.com/condition/cold-flu-sinus/how-many-people-die-of-the-flu-every-year)

At the same time, we have to consider the word of experts who tell us the Chinese virus is more deadly and infectious than the common flu. This opinion has led to the exceptional precautions to avoid coming down with this virus.

Meanwhile, the news media outlets practice their alarmism regarding the Chinese virus. This misconduct induces, fosters, and furthers the panic, fear, hoarding, and overreaction among the public.

All this said, let us hope the precautions to contain the Chinese virus have worked.

It may help to know only 0.0014% of humanity has died from COVID-19. 17 million people die each each year from other infectious diseases. This is about 148 times the COVID deaths.

I fear the deaths from poverty, starvation, suicide, etc. caused by government restrictions. Only time will tell where more lives are lost.

The Covid-19 virus is much more infectious than the 'common' flu - it can travel from a 'carrier' to many unsuspecting 'hosts'; that is why so many could be surprised in the NYC area, apparently as the result of some sort of contact with someone who had been in Europe. Nobody seems to have natural immunity and nobody can gain immunity via vaccine. Our governor reported today that the infection curve does seem to be lessening even though we have not yet reached the 'peak'; the most recent report from our state officials shows that almost three times as many Hoosiers have died as a result of the Covid-19 virus in three months as died as a result of the flu in six moths. The only way I have to avoid it is to avoid contacting someone who is already infected. That is why I am so careful in my contacts with people these days, and why it has affected my shopping, which is supposed to be the subject of this thread.

Erroneous: "Nobody seems to have natural immunity and nobody can gain immunity via vaccine."

Some fraction of the population can become infected with the Chinese virus without showing any sign of it. They have a natural immunity, apparently.

Another fraction can become infected but experience only mild to moderate symptoms. To them, it is like having a cold.

The largest fraction who suffer and die from the virus and its effects encompasses older folk with an underlying medical condition that renders them more vulnerable to it.

I saw a graphic that depicted the death rate by age, from youngest to oldest. I wish I'd saved its link. It showed the death rate among the oldest folk as something like 80 percent, and among the youngest at something like 1 percent or less.

Further, I learned today that the Chinese virus has two or more strains. So the reaction to the virus may depend on several variables.

Finally, the medical scientists will develop a vaccine for the Chinese virus. Then way fewer people will die from it if they receive the vaccine. Please recall that the scientists developed a vaccine for the polo virus and made it go extinct.

Those are the people known as 'carriers'. They are infected with the Covid-19 virus without showing any sign of it. The key word is infected - which means they can spread the Covid-19 virus to other people. The purpose of this thread is asking people how they can obtain what they need without encountering someone like that and being infected theirself.

A person who has immunity would not be infected, and therefore could not spread it to others.

Perhaps it is more appropriate if the virus is referred to as the Coronavirus, Covid-19 or just the virus.

You can find the info on the Chinese cover up and pressuring WHO on your own. There is plenty out there. And you will see more as time goes on.

Taiwan told WHO of human to human transmission Dec. 31. China causes WHO to ignore Taiwan. WHO put out a statement Jan 14 that there was no human to human transmission. It wasn’t till Jan 24 that they fessed up. They joined the chorus criticizing Trump for stopping travel from China Feb. 1.

Correcting this is part of the long term worldwide solution. The world is political and this part of the threat to our health needs to be a lesson learned.

Likewise we need to consider what constitutes strategically vital stuff and move its storage and manufacture to the US. One of the things China also did is to stop shipments of PPE to the US in December...but didn’t tell anyone. I don’t see why the media is suppressing that info (I know because my son is President of a hospital and had his shipments purloined.)

https://nypost.com/2020/04/05/trump-admin-weighs-legal-action-over-alleged-chinese-hoarding-of-ppe/

Those are just two reasons it is the Chinese virus.

The virus can go by several names. I prefer Wuhan virus, mostly because it goes to origin.
