Midges still swarming for another month, I'm told. Skin So Soft worked like a charm.

I would hate that. I can't stand unpleasant insects that buzz.

It just so happens that my wife and I arrived in Cumbria a few days ago for an 8 week vacation. We are approximately 30 miles from the Scottish border. In the past, we've covered much of the southern part of the Scotland just by driving a rental car all over the place. We have talked about going much farther north, but I'm not sure I want to brave any potentially stormy weather in a car that I'm driving. Where does your bus tour start from? We've seen some that begin in Inverness and go way up north and last for 3 days. We've seen some castles (Edinburgh and Stirling) on our day trips, and while we would like to see more of them, anything with scenery would be very nice if the weather cooperates. A link to a tour bus company that you trust would be appreciated.

I have to say to the OP that the pictures are very well done. Thank you.

Thanks for the compliments. My tour started in Edinburgh and traveled north up the coast to John o'Groats (ferry to Orkney). Back down the western coast to Isle of Skye (favorite scenery of the trip), down through Glencoe, finish at Glasgow. Weather forecast each day was "rain" but no day was a wash-out.
Our tour bus was Gate 1. Can't say enough good things about them.

Love this set. Would love to go to Scotland myself.

When you go, Jack, the landscapes on the Isle of Skye are amazing. But the roads are bloody narrow and the pull-outs are few and far between. The cities are great with impressive cathedrals and churches. The scones are delicious but you may get tired of fish-n-chips.

Forget the "buzz", Heather. They are mostly "silent-but-deadly." One Hog member had described them as "gnats with fangs." Quite accurate, that.

If you get tried of Fall leaves in New England, trees are rather sparse in Scotland. Could be a good change for you.

A very wonderful set of photographs of a time not that long ago, in historical terms. The first time I saw some of these castles was as a lowly member of the Royal Naval Reserve in the early 1960s. We were on a minesweeper and sweeping up mines unbelievably left over from WW11. The islands of Western Scotland were very mysterious and magical, and very beautiful! Even as a young man approaching 20 I found them stunning. Thanks for the photos and for the memories!

Thaks, Scotty. When one waitress answered "Yes" rather than "Aye" to a question, my wife was a tad disappointed.
