Isn't the 18-400 a crop sensor lens???

Yes, but it can mount a FF camera. It will cause vignetting at wider focal lengths.

Had some extra money............ Bought as a novelty lens............ I was dead wrong. This lens is no novelty. It's the real thing. Took it on a cruise and, a tropical vacation. Used it on a Canon 5DMIII. Did not disappoint. Somewhat soft at 400 but was only noticeable to the untrained eye. Good lens to have. Taking it to the Zoo next week.

Did you not experience vignetting on a full frame like the 5d mkIII? This is a crop sensor lens, and I love it on my 7D mkII, but never thought of putting it on my 5d3.

Great lens for the money - covers such a wide range of focal lengths...

Cons:
- not that sharp at the long end (towards and at 400mm)
- sometimes struggles to autofocus on objects (like birds) when there is grass or bushes in the foreground..

I love mine. The only problem I have encountered is lens creep when I point it straight down towards the ground.

I’m interested in hearing feedback from the group the about the Tamron 18-400 lens... likes/dislikes ... shortcomings ... positives.

First off welcome to the forum.
I have had one for 8 months now very pleased with it. Good all around lens, but does get heavy after a while (I'm getting Old) so always have at least monopod if needed to help. As mentioned not perfectly sharp at the 400mm range. And if not locked down in 18mm focal can drift to 300mm+ quickly. The only thing I can say against this lens is that the zoom capability from 18mm to zooming in is a little hard to twist into zooming (it kind of sticks when at 18mm), I thought after a while it would loosen up but it hasn't. Maybe made that way because of the barrel lock. And it is not a fast lens, low lighting conditions can be a hassle. For the most part hardly ever comes off the body. I have the Canon T6 that came in kit with 2 lenses which are 18-55 and 75-300, the one thing that impressed me right off was how quiet this lens was compared to the canon lens's.

I took mine for a Danube River trip. Only lens I used I liked the ability to get close and long shots w/o changing the lens. All shots came out great.

Have had mine since it came out. Started using it on a D7200 and moved it to my D500. Mine needed to be tuned using the Tamron Tap-In but after tuning, I am pleased with the results. The lens is not as sharp as more expensive zooms, but IQ is fine. No other zoom matches the range of 18-400mm. It does have some quirks like the focus ring spins when AF is active and you cannot override AF with the focus ring, but have to flip the switch out of AF mode to MF mode then manually focus. On the other hand the VC is excellent, AF is good, typical Tamron. I mainly bought it for family vacations where I didn't want to carry multiple lenses. These pics might give you an idea of the IQ. The 1st and 3rd were taken at 400mm f/6.3. The middle one at 70mm f/8. All three shots were handheld.

How do you tune it? Did you have to send it to Tamron?

The first Tamron I bought was a 150-600mm f/5-6.3 G2 for birding. I was not happy with the results out of the box and I ended up sending the lens and my D7200 to Tamron for tuning. It was not much better when it came back, so I thought I had wasted my money. Searched, read, studied, bought the Tap-In and learned how to tune. It was a struggle, especially tuning at infinity, but managed to pull it off and now the G2 gives me excellent results in the center and it's OK at the edges. With my new tuning skill I bought other Tamrons including the 18-400mm.

Pic was taken with an !8-400 on D500...cropped only. Not as sharp as the lens she's currently using, but works fine for us.

I've had my Tamron 18-400 for about 1.5 years now. I use it almost exclusively on my Nikon D500. It's not a fast lens, which means it has limitations in low light, but it does a pretty good job otherwise. I bought it for a trip to Tennessee, & it hasn't disappointed me yet.

I’ve had mine for almost two years with great results. It’s not a fast lens but works well for me on trips to Africa, Hawaii, Iceland, Spain, etc. I like to only carry one lens on vacation, don’t like too much weight. Great lens for the price and versatility. I use it with my Nikon D5300.
