Most of my comments have been covered ... I found it to be soft, particularly out near 400 with wildlife. It's a pretty good walk around lens if not stretching it out. Also found it isn't as fast as I had hoped. But generally satisfied. Will share something that I was told ... can't say for sure it's true, but was told to only use it on a cropped sensor Canon ... that it can damage a full sensor which the 5dIII is. So you might want to ask someone who knows.

I use the Tamron 18-400 on on a Nikon 5500. I take photos for my enjoyment mostly flowers, butterflies, farm scenes and landscapes. I do sell photo cards which I print and people rave about them. I have other lenses, fixed focus and zoom. I do some post processing, cropping, haze removal, sharpening, light adjustment and occasional white balance. The lens is a bit heavy and the zoom is not as smooth as it might be. I try not to use it at 400. It's been a long time since I used another lens even for close-ups of flowers. For me it is great! This photo was taken from about 30+/- feet, hand held, at 400mm, f10, ISO 200, 5.4 with the above PP.

Isn't the 18-400 a crop sensor lens???

Great lens; I use it as my workhorse rarely using any other lens with my Canon 70d

After several thousand shots, ours does an excellent all around job.

Glad to hear that Ed. I'm taking my new one to South Africa in October so it should work out well. Hope you will be posting some of your Kenya shots soon.

Had some extra money............ Bought as a novelty lens............ I was dead wrong. This lens is no novelty. It's the real thing. Took it on a cruise and, a tropical vacation. Used it on a Canon 5DMIII. Did not disappoint. Somewhat soft at 400 but was only noticeable to the untrained eye. Good lens to have. Taking it to the Zoo next week.

Curious as to how you used it on a Canon 5DMIII which is a full frame camera. The Tamron 18-400 only works on a crop sensor.

Great lens! Ive had it for over a year on my D7200. Only negative and its a small one is that the lens is heavy. Other than that, I score it a 98!

I've had mine for almost two years and am very pleased with it. It's not a fast lens - it does very well in natural outdoor light, not so much inside, although I've gotten good night shots with it. If you do a search you'll find plenty of posts concerning it, most of which are pretty positive. It's a good all purpose lens and well worth the money IMHO.

Welcome to UHH!

Same reply from me. I had my Tamron 18-400 for about two years on my Nikon d7100 and liked it a lot. Outside it gave me really good shots of cities in Morocco and animals in southern Africa and other places. It was also excellent as a travel camera shooting from my motorcycle. However, it was less than satisfactory in low light (yes, my crop dslr was also part of the issue). I compensated for that with a 50mm 1.4 prime that worked very will in low light. I think that if you consider the low light situation that the Tamron 18-400 will be a good lens for you.

I've had mine for a few years and it is basically my walk around lens. It is a crop sensor lens, so you're talking about 45mm-640mm equivalent on a full frame. 3.5-6.3, so it's not the fastest lens. Fast and quite AF. Looks sharp at all focal lengths, though I usually back off just a touch at 400mm. If I may suggest, check it out at your local camera store. I think you'll like it.

It's a Tamron. Nothing else needs to be said.

Not true that the 18-400 only works on a crop sensor camera. Some full frame cameras have a "crop sensor mode" that allows their use.

It's the most versatile lens I own. It's welded to my D7200. The close focus, even at full zoom, is a real plus! For low light I go to my Pixel 2 Night Sight . The image is hand held at 400 mm - perfectly adequate for on screen viewing.

Amazing since it is an APS-C lens and the 5DIII is full frame. How bad was the vignetting?
