This a GOOD reason to NEVER put your camera atop your car before getting in, and while talking on your cell phone. The lens did not survive either. The only things salvaged were the strap, the hot-shoe cover, the battery and the memory card. I'll keep it just in the outside possibility that the shutter and/or sensor are still usable.
Here's the story for your wife. You made the mistake of buying a cheap third party battery. It overheated and exploded inside the camera. Then you can stress how lucky you were not to be holding it at the time. Think of all the sympathy you'll get from her.
All kidding aside, sorry to see this happen. That would have really made me ill.

That is definitely a CYA story. Creative.

My stomach just dropped. OUCH.
My husband left his cell phone on the bumper of a forklift, it of course fell off and the forklift drove over his IPhone. Phone still works, just the screen and the back are crazy like crazy. He's not so patiently waiting for March 1st, he'll be able to upgrade then.
I dropped an iphone on the street one day and didn't miss it until my next stop. I backtracked and found it. It looked a lot worse than that camera. It just happened to fall in the path of the rear wheel. Not the first expensive phone I managed to destroy. A couple of drowning victims and a decapitation by a lawn mower. I buy the cheap ones now with no data plans. If I need internet that's what the laptop is for.
My heart goes out to you.
It's the kind of disaster that happens to me.

I did that once with a large coffee and the driver behind me followed me for miles giving me the finger. Homeowners insurance did not cover the coffee but pretty sure they will do something for you. Good Luck
If it was Starpukes it might have been worth filing a claim. Not sure what your deductible is on lose of coffee. Never mind that subject is on another thread.

Can't imagine .... when did you realize it?
When I heard the crash......
When I first saw the shot I thought: Wow, that is a really cool shot! Then I started reading and realized: Oh, my! that is the fellow's camera, and he didn't make it look that way just for the great shot. Hope the insurance takes care of it. The D7000 seems to be a pretty nice camera...just saying. Sorry about the camera, though.
At least the memory card survived.

I GOT TEARS IN MY EARS LAYING ON MY BACK CRYING OVER YOU. I think that was a country westren song. Im sure they could come up with a good one if they saw that camera. Thats one I wouldn't tell the the wife.
A 36 inch tree? Must have been a real cheap chain saw. (lol)

Lmark, did you try it? Maybe it still works!! Sorry
Happened to a friends chain saw once. A 36" tree fell on it. Of all the parts, only a little rubber gas line was salvaged. He was lucky to be alive.
Good Luck with the insurance.

It would be the final memories. Something you'll never forget. I would frame the last shot and hang it on the wall no matter how bad it was. And a small shot and mount it on the dash as a reminder to check the top of the car before putting it drive.
