This is what you missed. We already established that it is very unlikely the date is 1862. It is also not The Dowager Empress, and probably not Alice Roosevelt. There are many, many photographs available of both of them. The hat and clothes of the western woman indicates the photo was probably taken around the turn of the 20th century. Even if it is Alice Roosevelt she wasn't born until 1884 and did not visit China until 1905 when she was 21 years old.

As an addendum she died in 1980 at the age of 96.

He has at least one eye, if not two. Don't waste your time. He can read. Understanding, though, is rather questionable.

You are probably correct.

By the way, it also occurred to me that it is unlikely someone with the exalted status of Empress of China in the mid 1800s would not allow herself to be photographed casually standing right next to a another person which could give the impression they were equals.

What in my remark the possibly 1864 might be some image number and not a date---indicates I didn't get what you relate?----Are you nuts?------?

Did PhotoShop exist in 1864 to add those graphics?

You said, "Maybe 1862 is not a date at all?" It had been pretty much established by earlier posts that the image was most likely not from 1862. Then, in your response to UserID, you said, "You tell me what I missed" You gave several of us the impression that you were not following the thread closely so I decided as a nice gesture to bring you up to speed. No, I am not nuts,

If you had read all the thread it was stated that the symbol following the number 1862 was the Chinese one for year. Since I’m illiterate when it comes to this language I will have to accept others translation as being the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth 😎😎. Tis minus 27 Celsius outside this morn and am heading out for my daily constitution so you’all have a great day.

I understand that color photography came about decades later than the claimed date of the photograph. Further, it looks hand colored which technique became popular before the advent of true color photography. The Roosevelt lady may've wrote up her travels, and this writing could establish the photograph's date. Experts on this forum may produce a useful history of the photograph.

The first color photograph was taken in 1861. https://www.facebook.com/natgeo/posts/the-worlds-first-color-photo-was-produced-in-1861-by-scottish-physicist-james-cl/141907512553644/

I don't think this is a color photograph. As said before, I think the colors are hand painted.

Agree, and I never said it was. I was merely introducing the date of the invention of color photography.

But that's not the date it became widely used.
