850 or 810? 1st full frame camera. I have a D500

The D5, D500, and D850 are the first Nikons to have a processor dedicated solely for autofocus. I have a D500 and D750. The autofocus in the D500 is noticeably superior. The D810 has an even older version of the 51-point autofocus module than the D750. I added the D850 in with the D500 and D5 because they all have the same AF module. That chart had not been updated to include the D850.

I'm looking to purchase a full frame camera to compliment my D500. I've been reading for a month or so. I can't make up my mind. Can or would owners of these cameras give me your( I know here we go ) opinion on why you like or dislike your D850 or and D810 please? I have lenses and all the accouterments. Just trying to get a feel for both from long term users.
Thanks Bob

You already have the best DSLR Nikon has to offer. If you need a second camera get another D500.

YES!

This is the best advice!

I've made this mistake meany times... If you buy the best one, you'll forget about the money. If you don't, you'll keep wishing for the missing features

The differences between the two are slight. Either is a fantastic camera. If "image fine detail" is your main interest, there really is a considerable difference between 36MP and 45MP.

Check the cost of the Camera, Computer, drive space to store the images plus what ever else you might need.
I do not dislike the D850. My computer handles my D810 images very well, if I went to the D850 I would more than likely need a bigger and faster system to handle the D850 images, and it is not worth the cost to me.
If I were to win the lottery Hell yes I would buy one just because I could!!!

This should be a no brainer. The D850. The camera is incredible.

However, I took 4 photographs with using 4 different sensors, essentially. It was difficult to tell which was which. Though, admittedly, one did have a bit different color rendition than the other three. I credit that to the 16bit capture as opposed to the others which were 14bit.

Look online for reviews and comparisons. That's the only way to decide.

While loving my D500, I also wanted to test the waters of FF, and picked up a used D810. While I appreciate the added pixels of the D810, it is not completely satisfactory for birding, due to fps and AF. If you are doing wildlife, i would suggest the D850. Otherwise, I would skip to mirrorless.

The D850 shares the same dual focusing system as your D500. I shoot both of these camera's for wildlife and have the EN-EL18c battery in my D850 to give me 9 fps. It is an improvement of 2 fps but in wildlife photography it is the difference in getting or missing that special moment that only comes by once. In the shot below a brown water snake has it's mouth open in an ineffective effort to bite the Great Egret, the 9 frames a second helped me get this magic moment.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

I have owned most Nikon's over my 47 years as a full-time photographer. Now into retirement still shooting part-time and for the love of the game... I sold my D800, D810, D3, D700, and purchased the D500 for sports and a D850 for portraits/groups.... both feel great and the controls and menus are similar.

Get the D850 IMO... the only way to go out with a bang! and the Nikon vertical grips.

Love the pair along with my 70-200mm 2.8 FL, 24-70mm f2.8, 14-24mm...

PS the 200-500mm works great on both bodies... D850 and D500 the perfect fit for almost any shooter's dreams!

Whichever one you decide to get, you’ll definitely save a few hundred dollars if you can wait for the holiday specials that will soon be kicking in. When I purchased my D810 four years ago from Best Buy during the Christmas season, it was marked down $500; definitely made me fell better about my purchase.

I have 3 D-500 that I use for remote setups (utilizing MIOPS). For manned photography I use a pair of D850s, One I use with a 500 or 800mm lens, The second I use with a variety of lenses for static images or video. After spending a few weeks researching all various types of data on the 810 & 850 as well as reading articles by Steve Perry (a contributor here) as well as comparison articles by Ken Rockwell, I felt the 850 edged out the 810....based on the type of photography I'm involved with

I agree, if for only the tilt screen (you mention low light) & iso performance alone. Much better focus system, etc.
