I'm looking to purchase a full frame camera to compliment my D500. I've been reading for a month or so. I can't make up my mind. Can or would owners of these cameras give me your( I know here we go ) opinion on why you like or dislike your D850 or and D810 please? I have lenses and all the accouterments. Just trying to get a feel for both from long term users.
Thanks Bob

Have an 810, love it. Best friend has the 850, thinks it is excellent, but feels the extra MP slows downloading images and post work.

Buy the most camera you can afford, and that should be the newer D850 of these two.

Don't start a cascading problem, if can be avoided. Do you have the computer equipment / software / storage to deal with the files from either of these cameras? Full-frame is also the D750 / D780 choice, without such massive image files.

Thank you I have a high speed pc that I built this year. so the downloading won't be a problem.I had a ssd and went with a NVME M.2 on my new machine with a pair of ssds for storage. That new NVME set up is so fast the first time I downloaded pics from my D500 I thought something went wrong. If your friend upgrades his machine tell him it is worth EVERY PENNY over a regular ssd. Thqank you for your time and reply.

Oh yeah I upgraded my pc this year. First one I've built in about 5 years. My old system was fine by most standards but lacked in the GPU dept and was maxed out there due to the ps. I'm running a pair of 2tb ssds and a 1tb NVME M>@ main drive all backed up by 2 drobos with 4 2tb drives each for storage and back-up. I'm a computer freak among other things. I just have an itch for better low light performance and I believe you are correct. Buy the best. I went thru 2 cameras before getting my D500. Bot5h Nikon a D7100 and a 7200. Wasn't happy until I ponied up and got the 500. I guess I should have learned by now. LOL If I buy an D810 in a year I'll find an excuse to buy the D850.Just like I did with the D500. lol Besides I'm curious about the focus stacking ability of the 850.Thanks Sir !!!

I have a D800 and was looking at a D810 as a second body. I made the mistake of holding a D850. The D850 has a bigger grip and fits my hand better. The D800 has seen less than 500 frames while the D850 is at about 4000. The additional 11 to 12 mb for each photo is not a big deal and they download faster from the Qxd card. I’m using live view more frequently because of the movable screen. Thinking of selling the D800 and getting another D850. My .02 good luck

My D810 is an excellent camera. I don't think that the D850 would give much better image quality with the lenses that I own. The D850 has better autofocus (Same as the D500) , automatic lens fine tuning (if you need it), greater FPS and some other refinements over the D810. I bought my D810 because that's what was being sold at the time. If I were buying today, I'd buy the D850 for the same reason. But I see no reason for me to trade one for the other. You can save quite a bit of money if you buy a D810 used, maybe for as little as a grand these days. Look around if you want to go that way.

I'm sure you know that you need FX lenses to take advantage of these cameras.

If you buy the 810, you will soon wish you had bought the 850.

Depends on what you're looking for. Faster in every way, better autofocus? Yes. If you're just going to stick it on a tripod and take landscape pictures, I think the advantage lessens.

Curious if he's ever used any of the other raw size options with his 850.
I don't always need full rez files and sometimes wish my 810 had these choices:

Full Size RAW (RAW Large): 8,256 x 5,504 pixels (45.4 MP, 100% resolution)
Medium RAW (mRAW): 6,192 x 4,128 pixels (25.5 MP, 75% linear resolution, 56.25% total resolution)
Small RAW (sRAW): 4,128 x 2,752 pixels (11.3 MP, 50% linear resolution, 25% total resolution)

More HERE.

I would think so! I wonder how much money do you save as you can't get the D810 new any more? The D850 is better in every way including the fact that it doesn't have the built in flash.

I have a D610 and a D850 as well as a D500. The D500 is a GREAT camera! But I used to shoot medium format film and wanted to go full frame. As far as ergonomics goes, the D500 is the best of the bunch. Feels great in my hands and I love the sound of the shutter/mirror going off. Especially at 10 fps. But FF is the way to nirvana as far as IQ goes, at least for me. I use them both about equally, probably the 850 a little more. Especially for birds because I can crop deeply into the frame with a bird that was a good distance away and still come up with a useable and often a beautiful image. Don't have the 810 so I can only answer half your question, but I think the extra mps are worth the extra money. You won't regret buying the D850. Much better Auto focus than the 810 if nothing else.

Consider the 810 for its built in flash capability.

I have these three cameras. They are all fine and will do just about anything you ask them to do. I like the Shutter of the D810, smooth, quiet, and reassuring. But the kicker is that the controls are identical on the D500 and D850. The D810 does not have the lighted buttons that you are familiar with on the D500, and the ISO button is on the oeft side of the D810 instead of adjacent to the shutter release. Pop up flash or not is no issue. Any significant lens vignettes in the flash field anyway. If video is a consideration, the D850 is quite a bit ahead. Same with wi-fi. And the D810 does not have the Fn2 button at the bottom left of the rear monitor like the D500 does. There are also some important new features on the D850. The Release Control dial is also different...like the D500 on the D850, not the same on the D810. The D850 offers some Live View improvements, and a silent shooting mode, and a more accessible artificial horizon.

These are the differences. They may or may not make a difference to you.

Keep it and do not go FF unless you have a need for it. GAS envy is not an excuse.

Note: I have both the D500 and D850 as well as a D800e.

The 'only' advantage of the D850 is the pixel count if you are only into photography.

Note, the D850 will compliment the D500...
