We've all read about the advantages of prime lenses - they're fast, they're sharp, they make us think more about composition and make us "zoom" with out feet, but a zoom lens can really be convenient. I have four primes which mostly sat on the shelf until recently - a Nikon "nifty fifty", a Tamron 90mm macro, a Tamron 35mm, (these three are full frame lenses) and a Nikon 35mm DX lens. I'm finding out that these lenses can be a lot of fun - how about you guys?

In this challenge, show us what your primes can do and why you like them - I'm starting out with my 90mm macro. Since it is for full frame it gives a 135mm equivalent on my DX body but I've found that it can be very versatile and is a pretty decent portrait lens.

Unfortunately I don't have a prime lens so I will be perusing everyone's contributions, may just give me a reason to invest in one!

Sue, that Spider is fantastic (yuk!) as are all your captures. Nice ones!

I love my prime lenses! I decided back when upgrading glass that primes were for me. It was definitely a learning curve to "zoom with my feet", but it has become second nature. I will return later with images!

I'll have to dust mine off, Sue

Do that and get busy now that the snow is gone - it IS gone, isn't it?

Look around for a used 35mm to get your feet wet - they're not at all expensive. Glad you liked the spider - he was really rather cute and I carefully placed him outside after his photo shoot.

So, I had to look up what a prime lens is!

A prime lens is one that has just one focal length only (in contrast to a zoom lens that covers a wider range of lengths). Prime lenses come in a wide range of focal lengths from wide angles through to the very longest of tele-photo lenses used by many sports photographers and paparazzi.

Then found out I don't currently have one for my favorite camera. Will check my old cameras and Bill's old camera to see if one exists in our collection...

Be back after I find out!

I can't stand them either, but this little guy was actually rather cute - here he is next to Chuck's finger.

Just last weekend I did the same by getting into my safe and digging out the "nifty fifty" f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8 and the 105mm f/1.8. Went to Red Rocks Park just west of Denver and took numerous shots with each lens. The sharpness is great and my composition was greatly improved. The whole purpose was to start my 8 yr old grandson into photography. He used my very old Kodak Easy Share CX 7430. It shoots 2mp jpg files so he went shooting everything in sight. He had a great time, loved the time we shared and now we are getting him a camera from KEH for about $50. He was very impressed with the clarity that my 3 lenses provided and is starting his own camera fund. I don't think he understands the difference of the Kodak price and my D750, but at least he has a goal in mind. I am keeping these lenses out of the safe and am using them for spring flowers, if the snows will stop and allow spring to enter.

I recently purchased a refurbished Nikon nifty 50 (f 1.8 - f 16) and am making myself use it. I also have a 50mm that came w the pre-owned canon 70D I bought a few years ago. They are my only primes. I can't always zoom w my legs so tend to rely heavily on my zoom lenses. This post is of images taken recently - in last month at least. If you don't have a prime, you might consider selecting only 1 focal length on a zoom lens and shooting only that focal length for Sue's challenge. It's an exercise in self discipline if you tend to use zooms because I've tried it and I keep wanting to zoom.

Nice set - I particularly like #3. The 50mm is a very sharp lens although I rarely use mine since it is an FX lens and on my DX body it is the equivalent of 75mm which can be an awkward focal length. I expect to use it much more when I upgrade to a full frame body in a few months (hopefully!).

Thanks, Sue. My Nikon is a full frame. Canon not. They all look very sharp on my monitor, but soft on upload.

Yes, Pat, I did think about that, too! I might be able to find a real prime when I locate my old cameras...I really depend on my zoom features!

I like and use both, I prefer zooms, because of their convenience factor, but I use primes a lot too. I do not see any difference in sharpness between those two, but the primes are usually faster (at least most times)!
