We've all read about the advantages of prime lenses - they're fast, they're sharp, they make us think more about composition and make us "zoom" with out feet, but a zoom lens can really be convenient. I have four primes which mostly sat on the shelf until recently - a Nikon "nifty fifty", a Tamron 90mm macro, a Tamron 35mm, (these three are full frame lenses) and a Nikon 35mm DX lens. I'm finding out that these lenses can be a lot of fun - how about you guys?

In this challenge, show us what your primes can do and why you like them - I'm starting out with my 90mm macro. Since it is for full frame it gives a 135mm equivalent on my DX body but I've found that it can be very versatile and is a pretty decent portrait lens.

My very first macro shot - not perfect but not too bad!

Hooks in to my issue of the moment. I am considering a Nikon 35mm 1.8 AFS (D3200). Versus 40mm 2.8 micro(macro). Loosing the light of course. Would I better off with the 35 mm and add extension tube for macro, and have the advantage of the larger F (4x light of 2.8)?

I have no experience with extension tubes but I have the Nikon 35mm and it's a very nice lens, especially in low light situations and it enables you to get in pretty close to your subject as well.

I'm afraid I'll have to sit this one out, Sue, since I don't have any prime lenses, but I will be checking in to enjoy all the images I just know fellow "hoggers" will share.

I must say, the first image you shared is technically excellent....BUT IT'S A SPIDER!!!

(You know they creep me out.)

I especially enjoyed the "portraits" of your grandkids (guessing) and the poodle!

Just last weekend I did the same by getting into my safe and digging out the "nifty fifty" f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8 and the 105mm f/1.8. Went to Red Rocks Park just west of Denver and took numerous shots with each lens. The sharpness is great and my composition was greatly improved. The whole purpose was to start my 8 yr old grandson into photography. He used my very old Kodak Easy Share CX 7430. It shoots 2mp jpg files so he went shooting everything in sight. He had a great time, loved the time we shared and now we are getting him a camera from KEH for about $50. He was very impressed with the clarity that my 3 lenses provided and is starting his own camera fund. I don't think he understands the difference of the Kodak price and my D750, but at least he has a goal in mind. I am keeping these lenses out of the safe and am using them for spring flowers, if the snows will stop and allow spring to enter.
