If you consider that you can judge someones ability by looking at one or just a few images they have posted you also need to ensure you are aware of what could also be thousands of failures they have not posted !

But to think of it I don't follow rule and to me rules are made to be broken. If the OP has problem with that it's too bad as he can't change anything.

In the 4 weeks that I have been a member on UH I have learned much. That any affordable 600 zoom lens will perform as good as the other. That "lighting and getting close" is all important to a sharp image . That morning "golden hour back light " is all important followed by getting as close to your subject as you can.
(thanks imagemeister for driving that home)Upon joining here I immediately posted images and asked for critiques...thank you all. Recently I've posted images and have received unasked for criticism from inept pixel peepers who have never gotten even a good image.

Rule number: 1. If you take the time to criticize then take the time to show a better pertinent image or at

I have recently posted 2 images that received criticism that I was concerned about. I looked at the critic's topics and …….definitely didn't qualify them to criticize. I know that we all have different perspectives and criteria for what we consider to be: "outstanding". As a retired Recon Marine (special forces) and OCD I am striving for perfection (very redundant sentence) I will never achieve perfection in this hobby and that makes me happy. There is no rule number 2 just that if you can't back up your criticism then I would rather that you go on your way.

A point that I think you should consider.
Even though them that can do and them that can't teach, there are many in many fields that can't while having a very good grasp of what is quality and what is crap. The truly talented are few or we'd all be movie stars. On the other hand we can all pretty much recognize a sub par performance. All comments should be at the least considered, and not rejected out of hand because the commenter hasn't shown anything you think is good. Are you sure that their stuff is bad and what you like is good? Yeah there are people who get a kick out pulling chains and there are those who genuinely offer what they think is constructive. Whether they have talent or not.

Too bad you can’t take input people have taken the time to provide. You are the problem here. If you don’t want feedback don’t post. Simple, eh?

Hello Mr Victor.
The topic of this discussion welcomes criticism. I’m purely analog. I can’t remember when last I turned on my computer. However, I had my first b&w darkroom at 12 and color at 14 years old. I’ve been on this site for several months now just to see what digital photography entails. I signed up to comment just yesterday. I hope you feel I’m qualified to say this to you.
I feel all of your photographs are wonderful as they are. What I have a problem with is your failure to understand the difference between the two words opinion and critical. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. You however you are the only one here who is critical in the use of the word inept. That’s truly critical. I feel you owe the readers an apology. May I suggest therapy to help you understand OCD and how it affects your views of yourself and others.
Sincerely,
Hello Mr Victor. br The topic of this discussion ... (show quote)

you're correct...should not have called anyone inept

Hello Mr Analog...even though you began and perpetuated your dripping sarcasm by misnaming me followed by your list of very impressive credentials I feel like I should ignore your impertinence but can't because I used the word inept and shouldn't have. The comments made to me were criticisms not constructive opinions or I would have named them as such. We are now off topic and down to semantics and having you list your credentials as not only a photographer but also as a PSYCHO analyst...

First rule, please yourself, don't look for approval from others. If you get it that's great, if not, if you like it, that's what matters.

In accordance with your second rule I'll post one of mine of a female cardinal. Is it over saturated as is your first shot? Yes. Is it interesting and in focus with lots of detail and an interesting "pose" as is yours? Yes. Would desaturating either pic make it more ordinary and less interesting? Yes.

You are the artist here. I long ago stopped asking others except my wife for their opinions of my shots. What you say goes. If you are happy with a shot that is all that matters. After all, this is a hobby, not a business.

The best thing to do with critiques, positive or negative, is just say thank you. Then decide for yourself what is and what isn't helpful. I've mentioned before that critiques should not turn into debates. Everybody has an opinion that nobody has to agree with.

OK, as to one and two, matter of taste, I prefer #1 see attached two of my shots of the same species

#3 very good pose - no such thing as perfect - but close

#4 I agree, not a good pose, the bird looks like it is about to tip over backwards

not as sharp or detailed as I prefer because this is a major crop of a bird pretty far away
not as sharp or detailed as I prefer because this ...

Better color and detail from only about 10-12 feet above the bird on a footbridge
Better color and detail from only about 10-12 feet...

Well I won't ever again give the negative critiques as much time. I am new to this or any photo blog and am new to this hobby. I had never viewed any other posts of a purple gallinule and sincerely wanted to see what the critic was talking about....thanx
