Check out the type of aircraft that you will be on either on your ticket receipt or by going online. If you fly on a Boeing or Airbus plane the overhead bins accommodate luggage 22X14X9. If you fly a regional jet, then count on placing the backpack under the seat in front of you. That will handle a bag 18X11X6 easily. I take camera equipment on a plane almost monthly and only carry on. Never a problem. Have fun.

If you have a bean bag in your bag it will cause the TSA person to search your bag. Take it out before putting it through the xray machine.

When going through TSA, make sure to have your body and lens cap handy. Better yet, just cover them to begin with. They will ask you to remove anything bigger than a cell phone from the bag and your lens off the camera.

Interesting. I’ve never had to remove anything from my camera bag. Only a laptop and iPad. Next time I fly it will be with TSA precheck so it’ll be even easier.

I always fly with TSA recheck and the bean bag was a problem even then.

I travel with my D-850 and several lenses, usually one large telephoto a dozen times a year. As long as your bag meets the 22 inch carry on limit, no problem.
If you join TSA Pre check you will not have to take large electronics out of your carry on bag.

Not true. I always do the pre check; but still, they took my camera out of the bag when I flew to Florida last December. I wasn’t allowed to touch it! My extra batteries were in a small bubble wrap bag, but they never looked at them. I guess it depends on the TSA agent you get.

Be sure you don’t have liquid lens cleaner in your camera bag. I carry lens wipes instead. Also, my camera gear is in a bag small enough to fit under the seat.

Next year, I plan on taking my Nikon D500 and 150-600 lens in a backpack that will fit under the seat. I prefer not to stuff expensive camera gear in the overhead. Plus, if you board late, there may not be room!

I've flown out of LAX many times and never had a problem toting my camera bag or camera backpack as a carry on. So, no need to worry.

Planning to fly to Phoenix this Fall and take my basic gear in a small shoulder bag - body, 2 lenses, extra battery, charger, SD card, small stuff. Anything I should be concerned about, other than somebody grabbing my gear?

Loose batteries are the only problem … maybe. The airlines usually want the batteries in their original pack, or in the device they were made for. The loose batteries should be wrapped or otherwise stored so the terminals are covered. I use painters tape to cover the contacts. If you have some empty plastic pill containers that the batteries will fit into - one into each container.

During national and international flights I have carried camera & lenses in a moderate sized GoPro bag under the seat in front. No problems. Li batteries are in small plastic ziplock bags that I purchase from Walmart at 100 bags for a dollar. I keep the batteries in these bags all the time. Contacts up = charged. Contacts down= need charging. Have not had any problems with that. Only item I have had to take out of a bag is the I-Pod.

You're good. I do it all the time. I have a Ona Messenger bag and carry the exact same gear without any problems. Just have a problem at airport when I have to take everything out at customs.

Fly with mine all the time - in fact I just flew in from Philadelphia on Saturday with my bag in tow.

Be sure your extra batteries are in cartridges or somehow have their contact points covered. If it's a roll-on and you're in a later loading group, you may have to check your bag. I actually have a small roll-on that will also fit under the seat, so I put my camera stuff in that. Flights to Phoenix get full quickly!

Oh, and BTW, in the last 30 days I've been on many planes through many airports. All of them had a sign about hand-checking film. Just ask.

What is your small roll-on bag that fits under your seat. That sounds good.

Buy some good neoprene sleeves, bags or wraps. Pack it in a grungy backpack. Nobody will try to grab it.

Especially if you dress the same way. Hehe.
