Flew from Atlanta to Honduras on Delta in February. I carry a backpack with my stuff including camera. The flight attend told me I had to stow the backpack under the seat and not use the overheads. Overheads were saved for roll on suitcases. I used the overhead anyway and did get some sour looks.

I cover the contacts on my spare batteries with a small piece of black electrician's tape. No problems.

Several here have referenced covering contacts on extra batteries with tape. Covering the contacts is a good idea, and is required by current regulations as the result of a couple of incidents in recent years. But I would be careful about my tape choice. 3M electrical tapes use adhesive that degrades and gets "gooey" over time or if it gets warm. Duct tape is famous for leaving a mess behind when removed, as do most types of medical and first aid tape. This residue can accumulate between, in, and among the contacts on the battery, later getting transferred into the camera body and causing real problems that can cause both physical and electrical trouble and be very hard to clean up.

The only tape I would consider using for this purpose, if you have to use tape, is gaffer's tape. Gaffer's tape has strong adhesive, is specially formulated to tear easily across the tape, but is very strong in the other direction. It is also specifically formulated not to leave any residue when removed. It's available at places like Guitar Center.

What is your small roll-on bag that fits under your seat. That sounds good.

I got it at Walmart. It's part of the Lexington Collection by TPRC. I've had it a couple of years now.

Planning to fly to Phoenix this Fall and take my basic gear in a small shoulder bag - body, 2 lenses, extra battery, charger, SD card, small stuff. Anything I should be concerned about, other than somebody grabbing my gear?

Is the question about the destination itself OR is it about the gear that you may or not take as carry on during a commercial flight?

Going through security check in Mexico, they took away 4 of my eneloop double a battery which were in a plastic zip lock bag. Be careful going abroad with batteries.

Last time I flew out of JFK, they wanted cameras and batteries out of the carryon and in the bin for examination. Make sure you have your batteries together in the same ziplock bag.

The years of 2016,17 and 18 my wife and I flew to Aruba from Newark NJ the first year and JFK the second and third year, the first two years I used a Manfrotto back pack and the last year i used a Vanguard shoulder bag, both were sized for carry on, no issues at all, all that I did was to unzip the bag and show the agent befor I ran it through the x-ray machine, nothing had to come out.

USA Precheck or US Global Entry, if you fly internationaly, are the easiest ways to clear US security/immigration with minnimum delay. Either are well worth the time and cost.

I actually just took this trip and the one thing I would recommend is a TSA approved bag. Someone in line was told to unload all their gear. I didn’t have to do that because my bag is TSA approved (back zips open so you can see everything inside). Even with that someone told me to unpack my lenses in Phoenix but they walked away before it was my turn in line and I just put the bag through with no issues.

Did this today. Flew from Louisville to Houston, and then switched planes and went to San Antonio. No problems with TSA or any one else. Place extra batteries in individual ziplock bags. They don't like loose lithium batteries. Good luck.

I fly all the time with my camera and no issues. You will have to pull the camera out for TSA... Is larger than a cell phone :) Got to love TSA rules!!

You might want to pack your extra batteries in a check -in bag. TSA is concerned that camera batteries could cause a fire. If you keep the plastic protector thing on and keep them inside the original cardboard box they came in you should be okay but they don't want them rattling around loose inside your bag for good reason.

I have travelled internationally with my tripod folded up and strapped onto the outside of my sling type camera bag with no probs.

All over the world. Here is my go to carry on plane gear. Size related to typical waiting room seat. On the left a old beat up well used Lowe Alpine daypack. Book, headphones, toiletries, change of at least underwear, sunglasses, reading glasses and whatever else goes in here. On the right is some sort of Lowe Pro camera sling bag which carries camera equipment. 5d Mark III with 24-105 L attached, 16-35 L (?), Nifty fifty, either a 70-300 L or 70-200 L with 2x converter, batteries, charger and several extra CF cards all fit into it and qualifies as extra "personal" item because it does fit under the seat (sort of, I usually just stuff it overhead with the daypack). Tripod, ball and gimbal head in check on. Yes I always check on. Most international flights give you at least one free (except for any American based airline) but if I have to pay, WTF cost of travel, don't ever cheap out to keep a large carry on of camera equipment. If ever in a questionable situation, throw your gear for the days shoot/excursion into the beat up day pack. Pad with clothing or towels from hotel. Sally forth and enjoy yourself. I have never had a problem with security, theft or whatever concerns may be in over 40 years of travel. Enjoy

I flew from Phoenix to Portland, OR and back two weeks ago and specifically asked at both places if camera and lenses needed to come out of the carry-on. At both spots, they said no, leave them in.
