I frequently fly with a body or two and a third lens in my backpack, along with a spare battery. I put the backpack under my seat. On occasion I strap or tie the camera to the backpack. It is routine.

The years of 2016,17 and 18 my wife and I flew to Aruba from Newark NJ the first year and JFK the second and third year, the first two years I used a Manfrotto back pack and the last year i used a Vanguard shoulder bag, both were sized for carry on, no issues at all, all that I did was to unzip the bag and show the agent befor I ran it through the x-ray machine, nothing had to come out.

I fly international out of JFK at least once a year. For some reason, in 2018, TSA said they needed to examine all my photography stuff. I did have a number of different wires mixed in with the cameras and lenses; remote release, charging cables, camera download cable, etc. They may have looked suspicious on their screening equipment.

I have flown internationally and within the US many times, including on safari to Kenya, and except for taking my laptop out, I've only had to unzip to show the cameras once. Once returning to the US the airline wanted to put it under the plane, as I was preparing to board the plane, and I simply looked them in the eye and said that I had over $8,000 of equipment in there, I knew it would fit on this plane, and could they personally guarantee the equipment's safety, and they didn't say another word, and allowed me to board the plane. I now have a global access pass, but that has limited impact when taking off outside the US.
