Planning to fly to Phoenix this Fall and take my basic gear in a small shoulder bag - body, 2 lenses, extra battery, charger, SD card, small stuff. Anything I should be concerned about, other than somebody grabbing my gear?

Just came back from Arizona with my bag beneath my set and no problem at all, including checking in with TSA.

I fly with a carry on that fits under the seat in front of me. I prefer this to putting it in the upper luggage compartment. Others after you may try to slam their luggage into the compartment thus possibly damaging your equipment. This also keeps it within my sight at all times.

That’s how I travel and have never had a problem.

I use a black backpack for the expensive items and that is my personal item
,plus a carry on with the remaining gear well packed, which gets checked at the gate

When going through TSA, make sure to have your body and lens cap handy. Better yet, just cover them to begin with. They will ask you to remove anything bigger than a cell phone from the bag and your lens off the camera.

No problem, but, if you are concerned about some on doing "cut and run" get a strap with a cable in it. About $30.00 and if you local store doesn't have it B&H does.

All batteries must be in your carry on luggage.

Incorrect. alkaline, NiMH & NiCAD batteries are allowed in checked bags if installed in equipment and as spares (properly protected from shorting or damage). lithium ion and lithium metal batteries are also allowed if installed in devices, although, lithium ion over 100 watt hours capacity may require airline approval. NO spare or loose lithium ion or lithium metal batteries are allowed in checked bags.
Those are the FAA regs currently posted on their website. They are based on US DOT regulations. Airlines can, but usually don't, choose to be more restrictive.

Ditto.

As long as the bag is of a size to qualify for carry on, you are fine.

Be sure your extra batteries are in cartridges or somehow have their contact points covered. If it's a roll-on and you're in a later loading group, you may have to check your bag. I actually have a small roll-on that will also fit under the seat, so I put my camera stuff in that. Flights to Phoenix get full quickly!

Oh, and BTW, in the last 30 days I've been on many planes through many airports. All of them had a sign about hand-checking film. Just ask.

No. That's why I do these days. Safest way to get your gear there in one piece. Should sail through the scanner machine. You probably have a little extra space for things like contact lenses, meds or whatever.

I fly in and out of Phoenix all the time and have no issues. The last time I flew from Orlando back to Phoenix, I was told to empty out my bag of all electronics. I am seriously thinking of just taking a point and shoot for travels.

No problem. I've flown all over Asia, Africa, and Europe. At most following 9?11 once and a great while I was asked to turn on the camera but that was years ago.

I travel with my D-850 and several lenses, usually one large telephoto a dozen times a year. As long as your bag meets the 22 inch carry on limit, no problem.
If you join TSA Pre check you will not have to take large electronics out of your carry on bag.
