Your behavior is despicable.

Your statement is partially true. However, my particular county is mostly low lying marshes, and wildlife preserves with more dirt roads than paved, which are wonderful for photography and apparently equally opportunistic for drug dealing. Our county court system shows we have a significant high rate of drug users in our county. And I have come across a couple unoccupied spots where the drug activity has taken place. So please, don't think for one minute that remote areas are immune.

I've thrown my $.02 in. I'm leaving now.

What! I knew someone would make this political! Here we go Again! Questioning my Honesty? WOW! Who are You? I’m a 65 year old Senior and I’m insulted and offended by your comments! I simply asked a question if anyone carries Protection when out in the Wilds for theft of their gear. I’m an Usher in my Church and you should be ashamed of yourself for calling me a liar! I’m Completely Done with this post! There are some nasty Hoggs here. I’m shocked!

I know what you are talking about. So do you, but you are not being honest. If you were being honest, it would be obvious to all that you are trying to provoke a political fight, and that does not belong in this section of the site.

What does it say about someones cause when they have to resort to this sort of behavior to advance it?

Some sunlight into your shadows of fear was intended to help. There should be no fear when you're having fun.

Caring a legal firearm into the woods to protect oneself is a perfectly fine way to feel safer. Proper training and common sense should prevail. It is a personal choice that one does not take lightly. Folks that are condescending and snarky really don’t have much to contribute to any discussion.

Mark,

Chill. No one needs to degrade you. You are doing fine on your own.

If it is opportunistic for drug dealing, it is not remote. If it is an easy enough drive to attract drug dealers, it is not really remote. The OP asked about remote.

I frequently photograph bears in the wild. And you can be sure I carry the biggest gun I can carry when I do. Never thought about protecting my gear with a gun but I surely would. Some of the responders here sound like being a victim is Ok, it is NOT!

If I take a firearm with me on a photo shoot, or a camping trip, or a bike (motorcycle) ride, I'm not bringing it to protect my gear. I'm bringing it to protect ME!
There are at least 2 truck stops where my 6'3", 300 lb boss wont get out of his truck after dark. He's from Rhode Island, worked construction in NYC, isnt afraid of much of anything.
He told me ... I'm a whole 5'4" , 76 yr old grandma.... if I have to stay in one of those truck stops, to stay in the truck after dark, and carry. I do have a ccw permit. ( Notice I didnt say anything about weight? 😁 )
I also was in the military, and before that, competed in NRA pistol matches...
Unfortunately, there will always be bad guys, I just do my best to avoid them.

Stumbling across mommy and her cubs gets pretty exciting, a cat and its' lunch (I wasn't invited), wild dog packs (worse than wolves), and the occasional exotic cultivation patch (real unfriendly bunch), the loner that has staked out his personal piece of secluded Forrest, the pervert stalking a couple of young ladies (oh so sad, sheriff got him, had a record). Yep pretty tame out there, if you stay on the beaten path as most folks do.

Ron.

I don’t want this post to turn into a political discussion on gun control but am wondering what other Hogg’s do to protect themselves and their expensive equipment when in remote areas? I carry a firearm. Thoughts All? If this has been discussed before sorry but I’m reviving the thread!

Of course you want to start an argument on gun control.
There is no other reason to make a post like this.

You dropped "firearm" when there was no reason to mention it.

Unless you grew up in a cave, you've been worrying about
shopping bags, tools, and even the stereo getting ripped off
from the car your entire adult life. So have we all. That's life.

The difference is, most of us approach this problem with common
sense and aren't prepared to shoot somebody for stealing a hubcap.

I never think about that, no matter where I'm shooting! When I'm out shooting, I'm in too good of a mood to think about anything negative!

This conversation reminds me of why I quit hunting. Too many people in the woods with loaded firearms looking for a reason to squeeze the trigger.

I know people who say they carry a handgun for protection. Who protects us from them.

If someone gets too close and you say, "Stop, or I'll shoot" but the person doesn't stop and you k**l or injure him, and then you find out he was having a medical emergency (for example, prescription drug interaction, stroke), will you feel bad?

Are there statistics on how many two-legged thieves wander around the wilds hoping to stumble into someone with expensive camera gear?

Obviously, you missed the point.
