In fact they are the very people who should not be allowed to have a gun.

If I leave equipment in a car I have an obvious diaper bag that I keep the camera bag in. I keep the DB in plain sight.

I’m 62 and have never heard of anyone breaking into a car to steal a diaper bag.

Deep in the woods I do open carry.

Human hikers/campers and such don’t worry me much. Snakes and such are different.

Appalachian bears are by nature pretty docile by nature and if you give them a wide berth they’ll generally respect that, but if you stumble upon one with offspring all bets are off. I never have, but I do keep a can of bear spray just in case.

The best thing I carry however is a monopod for a walking stick to protect me from me.

In a remote area an ankle/knee injury can be harmful to deadly and there are still areas where cell reception is sparse to nonexistent.

The next best defense, and this applies to rural and urban areas, is always have situational awareness. Predators thrive on using the element of surprise.

Lastly, stay in shape. Predators also seek out weakness ... especially human ones. If you don’t look like an easy victim you probably won’t be one.
