I always transfer pics via my sd card, never connect my camera. However, for the purposes of an update it might be necessary. Hope you get it figured out!

I had a somewhat similar problem and finally tried using lightroom to download and it recognized my camera and now I use it to download directly from my camera to computer.

I have a Canon 5D Mark III camera that I have had no problems in the past connecting to my Dell computer and downloading photos. Then all of a sudden a week ago - the computer quit recognizing the camera was attached. My EOS Utility program that downloads my photos from my camera to my computer no longer recognized my camera was connected and in my computer settings my camera was no longer recognized as being connected. I have uninstalled my EOS Utility several times - hoping this was the problem - but to no avail. I even downloaded the program from the Canon website - but it still doesn't work. Thinking it might be a driver, (I checked my shutter count on my camera with a site someone had suggested on this forum - and had to change a driver), I reinstalled a driver for the EOS Utility program from the Canon website - but that didn't work either. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions to try - please help. (And no comments about it being a Dell and not Apple either, please:-) Thank you for any suggestions. Oh yes, my camera is able to download photos using my laptop with the EOS Utility - so I don't think it is my camera??? I have also changed connecting cords and that doesn't help either.

I had the same problem with a Fuji, which turned out to be bad connections in the cameras USB socket.

thr camera should have worked without a cable [wi-fi] but I never did get it to work that way,,, if it wasn't fer the photo capability, I would go back to CPM,wordstar & supercal3....sigh I have often thought that win updates were only to keep microsoft in business... Ed

I second this. Also you may just consider using a card reader instead of hooking up your camera.

I've had similar problem with other devices - turns out that the cable had gone bad - a new cable fixed the problem

Yes, but, Neil - L indicates he can do the uploads from his camera to his laptop w/o any problems. So, clearly - the problem is with the software on his PC!!!

Ed - Win Updates are to rectify all the problems that come from using an OS on an everyday basis. Many MS programmers are busy EVERY SINGLE DAY - writing new code, to upset all of the viruses and other interventions caused by hackers - on a daily basis (many of whom - use this very site - I might add).

I suppose, if you NEVER used the NET - you'd never NEED any updates ... but, many folks get PCs (and other handheld Net-access devices) - just, IN ORDER - to have Net Access, and that's where the problems happen. So, Updates become a priority, for continued Net use. One should check for Updates, daily, really.

What is this with this Card-Reader thing, Daniel? … Don't ALL PCS and Laptops come with a Multi-Disk Card reader slot in the very front of each PC (and somewhere along the edge of every Laptop) ??? I thought they ALL did. At least, the four store-bought ones I have in front of me. And, many of the home-brews, too - as I've had the forethought to add in those 5.25" or 3.5" plates, which incorporate extra USB ports, and a Multi-Card (6 types) reader, too. Most computers built within the last decade - ALL have card-readers, built in!!!!

Yes, thank you. We have done this in the past - but when all of this started, it will no longer recognize that there is a camera connected, therefore unable to get anything off of it:-(
After going through several steps as suggested - we are coming to the conclusion that it is a problem with the Windows 10.
I'm not quite ready to reset my complete computer, thereby losing all programs I have on it and having to reload all of my programs - so may work with how I am doing it with my laptop until we receive a reader card that we have order.
Thank you for your help and suggestion:-)

I'm having the same issue but have been using a card reader as a work around. I'm going to see if there is a compatibility issue like "run as win8". I'll let you know. When I got my new 7D mark ii it recognized the camera only once. I have been using a card reader since my first digital with a removable card and drag and drop the whole folder where ever I want it.

Steve - it only takes ONCE!!! … Once, the computer has done it once (recognizing your camera) it stores that recognition module, and then, assumes every time you connect your camera, after that - it's dealing with the same camera!!! … And, if you're a multiple-camera user (as some of us are) you have to TELL the PC its assumption is incorrect, and then add your other cameras, manually, as you go along. It has no way of knowing from which camera you're uploading … all it knows, is you connected a camera cable!!!!!

Yes but I'm a iMac guy and the new Mac's have them in the back of the machine instead of the side like they used to have (bonehead design flaw on Apples part). My USB 3.0 multi type card reader is right in front of me and I don't have to reach down, back, sideways or upside down to find it.

Oh, I see, Daniel … Windows PCs have the card slot right in the front, just to the left of the mini-plugs for the headphones, and microphone, usually - with the two front USB slots to the right of that ….

I have found over the years that, depending one how long you keep the laptop/computer, that inbuilt CF/SD slots don't keep up with what is happening in the real world. You soon find that they can't read the latest fastest new cards (in my case XQD and USH-II cards). I used to fit addon card readers to the PCs I built for others but kept getting service calls (on a $15 item) because they couldn't read the next size larger SD card. It was such a pain in the backside that I suggested they buy external readers and stopped fitting them. As for laptops that came with SD only (not completely true because I did sell some a long time ago that had CF readers in them) they also had the same problem. Plus if the reader failed you try and buy the small internal pcb that contained the reader from any supplier (assuming it wasn't part of the motherboard). Pushed pins ? - forget it.
External readers are the only way to go.
Upgrading your laptop/PC ? Tthen you take the known good reader with you.
Although I am not a Sony fan (getting spare parts etc has been a nightmare and excluding cameras since I have no experience with them so can't comment) they do make a nice external reader for XQD and USH-II cards.

Ahh, that is why getting an external reader fixed my problem with SDXC card. Although, I believe my specs on the laptop said it should read it.
